Learning Objectives
Introduce quadratic sequences.
Identify where 2nd difference is common.
Find Nth term for quadratic sequences.
The ideas/concepts, skills and subject material you aim to teach / Learning Outcomes
All – identify that pattern shapes can grow exponentially
Most –recognise quadratic sequences grow exponentially. Identify where sequences have a common 2nd difference.
Few – convert sequences with 2nd difference common into Nth term formulas
What the students will have learned during the lesson
Equality, diversity & inclusion strategies
Groups or individuals with specific needs (initials only), differentiation, TA deployment / Health and safety and wellbeing

Grains of rice on chessboard quiz
10 - 30 / Creating sequences with 2nd difference common / Dot diagrams –
1, 4, 9, 16 – continue sequence
Dot Diagrams –
Regular polygons – 2 dots to 7 dots -
how many lines needed to join all the dots.
Dot Diagrams -
Triangle numbers ((n2 + n)/2) / More able Identify dot diagram to represent sequence 6, 12, 20 What number comes before 6? What number after 20? What is formula? (n2 + n).
Identify next in sequence -2, 1, 6, 13
Less able
30 - 40 / Identify formula for sequences with 2nd difference constant. / Whole group activity. Identify formula for sequences with 2nd difference constant.
40 – 50 / Using 2nd difference common to create sequences / Working in pairs, create your own sequence with 2nd difference common. Swap with another pair – try to crack their sequence code. / More able derive sequence from equation.
Less able create sequence using common 2nd difference
50 - 60 / Recap / Plenary
Whole class recap
Homework - worksheet / Homework - worksheet
Lesson evaluation - to be completed after teaching this lesson. Reflect on what you did that either enabled or hampered learning.
Pupil progressDid you achieve your SMART targets? Did the pupils meet the learning outcomes? How do you know?
Action to take next lesson with the class a) to improve my teaching and b) to improve the classes learning. Please refer to the Profile Characteristics.
