SECTION 07 21 00

THERMAL INSULATION

PART - GENERAL

SUMMARY

Section Includes:

Provide perimeter foundation wall insulation (extruded polystyrene board insulation) at exterior foundation walls as noted on Drawings, in thickness indicated.

Provide fiberglass batt insulation where batt or blanket insulation where indicated or noted on Drawings or specified, unless otherwise noted or specified.

Where non-fire rated masonry partitions meet underside of structure, fill void solid with fiberglass batt insulation, including flutes of steel floor and roof deck.

Where non‑fire rated masonry partitions are built around structural members, to allow for dynamic deflection of structural members, fill void solid with fiberglass batt insulation. Structural members to include steel joists and beams.

Fill voids solid which are created between top flange of steel beams and flutes of steel deck when non‑fire rated masonry partitions occur beneath bottom flange of same beam. Fill void solid with fiberglass insulation when non‑fire rated masonry partitions terminate beneath steel beams.

Provide fiberglass batt insulation above exterior soffits.

Provide fiberglass batt insulation in cores of precast concrete plank where indicated.

Provide semi‑rigid fiberglass insulation in wall recess behind mechanical unit heaters.

Provide fiberglass batt insulation within cold formed steel stud framing at exterior applications as noted on Drawings.

Provide vapor retarder at exterior walls where indicated or noted on Drawings or specified.

Provide safing insulation (mineral wool insulation) at exterior walls where indicated on Drawings.

Provide polyisocyanurate board insulation at exterior masonry walls where indicated on Drawings.

SUBMITTALS

General Requirements: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 01 33 00.

Product Data: Provide Product Data for each type of product provided.

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

Packing and Shipping: Deliver materials to site in manufacturer's original, unopened packaging, with identification labels intact clearly stating identity of manufacturer, contents, branch name, applicable standards, and R‑Value.

Storage and Protection: Store materials off ground and protect under a water resistant cover against weather, direct sunlight, condensation, and damage. Do not allow materials to become wet, soiled or covered with ice or snow.

Damaged Materials: Promptly remove damaged material from site.

Protection of Plastic Insulation: Do not expose to sunlight. Protect against ignition at all times. Do not deliver plastic insulating materials to site ahead of installation time. Complete installation and concealment of plastic materials as rapidly as possible in each area of work.

Applicable Standard: ASTM C578, Type IV.

Physical Properties:

Density (ASTM D1622): Not less than 1.60 pcf.

Compressive Strength (ASTM D1621): Not less than 25.0 psi at yield or 10 percent deformation.

Water Absorption ‑ Volume (ASTM C272): Not more than 0.3 percent of volume.

Water Vapor Transmission (ASTM C355): Not more than 1.1 perm per inch.

Thermal Resistance (ASTM C177): Not less than 5.0 per inch at 75 degrees F, aged value.

Thickness: As indicated on Drawings.

Polyisocyanurate Board Insulation:

b. Firestone “Enverge” foil face polyiso

Description: Glass fiber reinforced polyisocyanurate foam core with solid aluminum foil facers on both sides, providing a Class A fire resistance rating without requiring a protective thermal barrier covering.

Thickness: As indicated on Drawings.

Semi-Rigid Glass Fiber Board Insulation:

Facing: Unfaced, unless indicated to have a foil face (vapor barrier) on Drawings.

Density: 3.0 pcf.

Compressive Strength: 100 psf at 10 percent deformation.

Thermal Conductivity: 0.230 at 75 degrees F mean temperature.

Thickness: As indicated on Drawings.

Size: 24 inches by 48 inches or 48 inches by 96 inches, as required.

Glass Fiber Batt Insulation (BATT INS):

Surface Burning Characteristics: When tested in accordance with ASTM E84:

Flame Spread: Less Than 25

Smoke Developed: Less Than 50

Cohesion: Insulation shall be sufficiently coherent to permit transportation and installation as a unit.

Size: Manufacturer's standard sizes best suited for each installation and of thickness indicated on Drawings or as required to meet indicated R‑Value.

Formaldehyde‑Free Thermal and Acoustical Fiber Glass Insulation:

Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS

Vapor Retarder: 6 mil, clear polyethylene sheeting, in accordance with ASTM D4397.

Provide polyethylene tape for sealing joints and punctures in the vapor retarder.

Vapor Retarders: Meets requirements of ASTM C1136, Type I, II, III, IV, ASTM E84 and ASTM E96.

Fire Retardant, Reinforced Polyethylene Vapor Retarders: (2) outer layers of polyethylene film laminated to an inner reinforcing layer consisting of either non‑woven grid of nylon cord or polyester scrim and weighing not less than 22 pounds per 1,000 square feet (10 kg; 100 sq. m), with maximum permeance rating of 0.1317 perm (7.56 ng/Pa x s x sq. m) and with flame spread and smoke developed indexes of not more than 5 and 60, respectively.

INSULATION FASTENERS

Adhesively Attached, Spindle‑Type Anchors: Plate welded to projecting spindle; capable of holding insulation of thickness indicated securely in position indicated with self‑locking washer in place; and meeting the following requirements:

Protect ends with capped self‑locking washers incorporating a spring steel insert to ensure permanent retention of cap in the following locations:

Insulation Stand‑Off: Spacer fabricated from galvanized mild‑steel sheet for fitting over spindle of insulation anchor to maintain air space of 3 inches between face of insulation and substrate to which anchor is attached.

PART - EXECUTION

INSTALLATION

Installation of Perimeter Foundation Insulation:

Install perimeter foundation insulation on face of foundation walls, at perimeter of building addition(s).

Perimeter foundation insulation installed to also serve as a protection board for foundation membrane waterproofing system is specified under Section 07.

Extend insulation from underside of floor slab down to 4 feet below exterior grade elevation or to top of footing, whichever is less.

Install insulation on foundation wall using insulation adhesive.

Apply adhesive to insulation in 1 1/2‑inch spheres on 12‑inch centers horizontal and vertical in accordance with material manufacturer's recommendations.

Press insulation in place using rocking motion.

Abut each insulation piece against adjoining piece.

Stagger vertical joint locations.

Fit insulation closely around penetrations.

Installation of Semi-Rigid Glass Fiber Board Insulation at Recessed Unit Heaters: Wedge insulation tight at back of recess behind mechanical unit heaters recessed in masonry walls as indicated on Drawings. Attach insulation to vertical surface by using Type N, Stik‑Clips with speed washers to hold insulation in place if required.

Installation of Glass Fiber Batt Insulation: Where batt insulation is applied to a vertical surface, attach insulation using methods that will ensure insulation will remain in position.

Install glass fiber insulation to fill entire space between top of non-fire rated masonry walls and roof structure as indicated on Drawings.

Install low flame spread glass fiber batt insulation with integral vapor barrier/retarder as top layer of insulation above soffits at roof overhangs.

Installation of Vapor Retarder:

Install polyethylene sheet vapor retarder at exterior walls as noted on Drawings.

Where vapor retarder is installed over metal stud framing, secure vapor retarder to framing by using adhesive, tape, or mechanical fasteners.

Lap sheets of vapor retarder at joints and continuously seal joint using polyethylene tape.

Cover fasteners used to hold vapor retarder in place, and around other penetrations through the sheet, with polyethylene tape.

Seal punctures and tears in vapor retarder using polyethylene tape.

Installation of Air Barrier:

Install air barrier in exterior walls in location noted in Drawings.

2. Lap sheets of air barrier at joints and continuously seal joint using tape specified by manufacturer.

3. Cover fasteners used to hold air barrier in place, and around other penetrations through the sheet, with tape specified by manufacturer.

4. Seal punctures and tears in air barrier using tape specified by manufacturer.

5. If fluid applied air barrier, follow manufacturer’s instructions for continuous application of recommended thickness.
