The Lightning Thief Project Guide

Category 1 – Creativity

1.  Create a detailed map of Camp Half-Blood. Include all cabins, activity areas, landmarks, etc. from the book. Include all elements of an actual map: scale bar, legend, key, labels, etc.

2.  Create a newspaper article for the Mt. Olympus Observer, the official newspaper for Mount Olympus. Your article should be about Percy’s adventure to save the master bolt, and an interview with biographical information of Percy Jackson. Realistic newspaper articles need to include title, author’s name, image, headings, etc.

3.  Create a diorama of Camp Half-Blood’s cabins. Use descriptions from the novel and knowledge of Greek mythology to create the perfect cabin for these gods and goddesses. This project has 20 bonus points for the effort on a great project.

4.  Create a 3D map of Camp Half-Blood Hill. Include all cabins, activity areas, landmarks, etc. from the book. This project has 20 bonus points for the effort on a great project.

5.  Create a diorama of Mount Olympus. Include buildings and scenery, along with characters based on the descriptions on the book. Put your best effort into making the small-scale representation. This project has 25 bonus points for the effort on a great project.

6.  Create a photo journal (like a scrapbook with journal entries) for the quest. Include important events and places like the exploding bus, Aunty Em’s Garden Gnome Emporium, the St. Louis Arch, the diner where they met Ares, Las Vegas casino, the water bed store, etc. Draw or print pictures to go along with the trip and write journal entries to explain what happened on the journey. You must include at least 10 pictures in your scrapbook and organize your project to show the sequence of events on the quest.

7.  Create a poster-size collage to represent the novel. Illustrate important characters, scenes, and/or themes in the book. You must include at least 10 pictures in your collage and you must write 2-3 sentences about each picture to turn in with the poster.

8.  Create a picture to represent the scene when Percy went to Olympus and met Zeus and Hades. Use descriptions from the novel. Check the details! Write at least a paragraph summary of the scene to turn in with the picture.

9.  Create a diorama of an Ancient Greek city. Do some research to see what should be included and how it was structured! This project has 20 bonus points for the effort on a great project.

10.  Create a picture to represent the scene at the St. Louis Arch. Use descriptions from the novel. Write at least a paragraph summary of the scene to turn in with the picture.

Category 2 – Characters

1.  Create a yearbook of Camp Half-Blood campers and staff members met in the novel. Include pictures, names, Olympian parents, descriptions of all the campers/staff encountered. If you have read other books in the series, include important characters from other books.

2.  Create an “I Am” poem for one of the characters in the novel. Include illustrations to accompany the poem. See the video for instructions for the poem if needed.

3.  Create your own demi-god. Use the outline below to create your character, then write a two page story typed (12-pt font, Times New Roman) or 4 page story written about their adventure to Camp Half-Blood or quest they are sent on from Camp Half-Blood. This project has 10 bonus points for the effort on a great project.

b.  Olympian parent

c.  Mortal parent

d.  Appearance – skin color, eye color, hair color, body type, style of clothes

e.  Special gifts/powers

4.  Create a “character locker” for one of the characters from the novel. Make a “locker” by using a shoe box or larger-sized box that you cover with construction paper or aluminum foil to make it look like an actual locker. Decorate the outside of the “locker” appropriately. Within the locker, place 10 real or toy items that are important to the character you choose. Write 2-3 sentences about each item you place in the locker, telling why each is important to the character.

5.  You are a demi-god. Write your own story. Which god or goddess is your parent? Why? Who is your mortal parent? Write a story (4 pages written or 2 pages typed in 12-pt font, Times New Roman) about your journey to Half-Blood Hill or a quest on which you were sent from Half-Blood Hill. Be creative. Create a title and illustration for the cover of your story.
