PRESIDENTS REPORT
May is here and nearly half the year has gone. This month is the Annual General Meeting and the appointment of a new board.
The Wynnum Redlands Club has very successfully achieved the Zonta goals of advancing the status of women both locally and globally. Fund raising has reached a peak, so we have been able to distribute funds to support education, safety and fellowship in the club environs such as Maybanke and Silky Oaks, Metropolitan South TAFE with bursaries, as well as within the State with funds to Cairns for the cyclone devastated area and to Professor Ian Frazer to support his immunology program, and overseas to the Kiribati program, in addition to the Zonta International projects. Congratulations to all our members who have steadfastly supported the club during the year. We have had some great fun and fellowship with Celebrating 25 years of service last October, a Christmas bus trip, several small gatherings as well as the IWD dinner. What a great year we have had.
As an incoming President I am very appreciative of club members, board members and the community who have embraced the club and supported me in this new role. I am sorry to lose the staunch support of Julie Hossack and Barbara Wills from the board. Both have worked tirelessly and brought their own brand of energy and initiative to the club and board meetings. You will be missed but not allowed to rest on your laurels for too long!
The ongoing board members welcome Mary Lou Podagiel, Beverley Tanner and Jillian Smith to join the team and we look forward to their contribution to the fellowship of Zonta. For all the details and a full report I hope to see you at the next dinner meeting with numbers and bookings for the Christmas in July evening.
The changeover dinner is to be held at my home on the last Monday of the month (28th). All existing board members, the newly inducted board members and the nominating committee are duly invited to attend. Please advise me if you are unable to attend.
Thank you to everyone for making this year so successful and effective in the Zonta family. I look forward to serving another year with a strong and cooperative team, which is another year wiser in the ways of Zonta.
Judith Trevan-Hawke
SERVICE and FUNDRAISING REPORT
- Sat 12th May Annual Garage Sale. Please collect as many saleable items as you can and deliver them to the Cleveland State High School in Smith Street on Friday 11th from 3pm. Thank you to all who have offered assistance in setting up on Friday afternoon… the more hands on deck the quicker we will complete this task.
- Sat 16th June Sausage Sizzle at BunningsVictoriaPoint. 2 rosters are needed 8 am 11am and 11am to 3 pm with a minimum of 4 people on each roster.
- Wed 25th July Christmas in July at ConnectionsRestaurantTAFEAlexandraHills The cost will be $30 pp and includes a 3-course “Christmas” banquet, plus welcome hors d’ouvres and petite fours with coffee/tea. We need a minimum of 60 guests. Prepaid tickets prior to 9th July Dinner meeting.
- Please note that only members and guests holding prepaid tickets will be able to attend such functions in the future. Hopefully this will avoid situations where commitments are made but not followed through with payment and attendances, which create financially tricky situations for the Club.
Julie Hossack.
STATUS OF WOMEN
Suggestions have been called for regarding the current YWPA award and the difficulty that clubs have in gaining nominations. We will be submitting a suggestion. The current round of submissions for the bursaries at Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE, AlexandraHills has started. Jill Maclachlan has agreed to sit on the judging panel and we should have the names of the successful applicants shortly.
We had a stall at the Women’s Expo held at Cleveland by the RWIN group on Saturday 28th April. The day was very interesting with a variety of issues relating to women being highlighted. It was a chance to catch up with women of similar interests and thanks go to Judith, Jill M and Margaret for looking after our display.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S NEWS
The vaccinations of Gardasil started in Australian schools in April. Professor Frazer’s work is continuing to have worldwide coverage.

PR & PROGRAMME
I know that everyone enjoyed the guest speakers at the last dinner meeting and I hope that we learnt something from them. As the next meeting is our AGM, there will be no guest speakers. I have placed ads for our garage sale in the local newspapers and sent the information for broadcasting to the radio stations.
Barbara Wills
MEMBERSHIP & ORGANIZATION
Judith, Jill and Margaret reported from the women’s expo of some interest in membership. The three prospective members at the April meeting enjoyed the night but have time constraints, which precludes membership just now.

BREAST CUSHIONS
The next working bee will be held at my home, 3 Whitehall Ave Birkdale, on Thursday 24th May from 10 am until whenever. We will combine the working bee with the biggest cuppa for cancer, so if you haven’t time for the working bee, please support the fundraising for Cancer. You will also be welcome to come just for the cuppa. Please bring a small plate for morning tea and a $5 donation for cancer.
