Dear Parents / Guardian / Students

I would like to welcome you and your son/daughter to our Fire Fighting class. During the year, we will be satisfying the qualifications for Missouri and National licensure. The class will consist of lecture and practical evaluations that will develop the skills and knowledge for confident patient management.

I hope this will be an enjoyable learning experience and will be an advantage for those who wish to pursuer a career in the emergency medical service field.

Listed below are some of the major policies, rules, grading, and reporting that will be followed during the school years:

a.  Eligibility for National EMT licensure:

i.  Absences – No more than 7 TOTAL absence in the school year

ii. 18 years of age and a high school diploma

iii.  75% average on all written and 80% all practical exams

iv.  32 contact hours in a hospital emergency department and/or ambulance ride along program.

b.  School attendance: At the thirteenth absence mark, you will be mailed a letter stating thirteen or more days have been missed and your son/daughter is in danger of losing credit. Credit will be only restored after proof by a third party stating the reason for an absence.

c.  The grades for the school year will be weighted to the following:

i.  Module or Major exams - 35%

ii. Homework / Pop Quiz - 20%

iii.  Compliance - 20% (attendance, attitude, uniform, and disciplinary actions)

iv.  Practical - 15%

v. Quiz - 10%

d.  There will be progress reports sent out on students on quarterly bases or as needed to keep you and the student informed.

5.  For students to be eligible for state testing students cannot miss more than 9 days for the school year.

6.  Students MUST have completed the SCT EMS program with an AVERAGE of 75% on ALL Written Exams to be eligible for State Testing.

7.  Students MUST have completed the SCT EMS program with an AVERAGE of 80% on ALL Practical Exams

to be eligible for State Testing

8.  Students must have completed the SCT EMS program with an average of 80% and all requirements to be eligible for College credit.

Uniform Policy

The policy reads:

Ø  All students will be in the expected uniform during the regular school hours of 7:10 to their dismissal at 2:30.

Ø  All students will be expected to maintain their hair to the length, style, and color that would be acceptable in the work force. (Fire Department or EMS Service)

AM Half-Day students will be expected to be in FULL uniform upon entering the classroom and must stay in that uniform until they are dismissed at 9:58.

PM Half-Day students will be expected to be in FULL uniform upon entering the classroom and must stay in that uniform until they are dismissed at 2:15.

Full Day students are expected to be in FULL uniform from 7:10 to 2:30.

Uniform consists of Dark Uniform Slacks, Uniform Shirt with Academy Logo, Black belt, Black boots or shoes. (No Sandals or Flip Flops)

Daily credit is given for Uniforms being worn. NO UNIFORM NO CREDIT

Exceptions:

1.  The PM student that arrives late from their bus or car may change after gaining permission to do so from the instructor for that day.

2.  The student has made prior arrangement with the instructor to be out of uniform for SCHOOL RELATED EVENT.

3.  The instructor has allowed for a free day or other activity.

4.  While the student is performing in class physical training, gym attire is accepted.

You will be expected to follow this policy during your time in this department. Failure to comply will result in a referral and disciplinary actions

Safety Guidelines

During the semester / year, we will be afforded the opportunity to enjoy a great amount of practical exercises. Inherently, this class must have a high degree of safety in order to protect you from harm. Both the Firefighter and the EMS classes have the responsibility of abiding by the following safety guidelines. These guidelines will be strictly enforced to ensure the safety of the students and staff.

The administration and staff take these guidelines very seriously and violations will not be tolerated. The student understands that any violation of said safety guideline which, could cause severe injury or death, will result in disciplinary action against you. The student will be suspended from participating in further exercises.

Shop Area (Classroom) / Practical Area (Outside the boundaries of the classroom)

·  No running

·  No horseplay

·  No profanity or loud talking

·  Do not leave the Shop Area or Practical Area without notifying the instructor.

·  Promptly follow the directions of the instructor.

·  The roof of the tower is absolutely off limits.

·  Minimal entry in the tower is two. (Do not go in alone)

·  No Body piercing jewelry or simple jewelry can be worn that may cause possible injuries.

·  No horseplay on or around the emergency vehicles and equipment

Classroom Guidelines

·  Respect for yourself, teacher, and other students are required.

·  Properly worn uniforms are required daily and are part of the students’ grade.

·  Classroom work and practical work in the shop is very important so attendance is a must. With an absence you are required to present a reason and on the day of a telephone call are required from you to show real life expectations.

·  Grades are based on attendance, classroom / shop participation, being prepared for class each day, and along with completion of exams / assignments.

  • One absences equals one day to make up homework / assignments
  • Two absences equals two days to make up homework / assignments etc…
  • 10% will be taken off of a test if absent without an excuse or fails to notify Mr. Krato.
  • If student is absent on a day of a test he or she will be given one day to make up the exam. Example: If Jane was absents on Monday the day of the test, she is responsible to make it up on Wednesday.
  • If a student fails to turn in an assignment on time he or she is given one extra day to turn it in for partial credit. Credit will be deducted each day after the due date for being late

·  Students will be provided lockers that have combinations. Each student is responsible for his or her own locker.

·  Students are expected to come to class with the attitude as if this was his or her daily job. This class is a privilege not a choice and will provide each student with real life examples of the work force.

·  Daily attendance will be taken and each student is required to sign in as if he or she is clocking in or work.

·  Drinks and snacks are allowed only in the classroom. Student is responsible for cleaning up after themselves. If students do not clean up this privilege will be taken away.

Safety Rules and Polices for Lab and Technology Education

1.  DO NOT EAT, DRINK, OR APPLY MAKEUP IN THE LAB. Keep hands away from the face. Wash hands and work area with soap and water when activity is complete.

2.  CONTAIN LONG HAIR AND LOOSE CLOTHING. Do not wear jewelry on lab days. Wear shoes that provide protection against spills or dropped objects.

3.  WEAR SAFETY GLASSES/GOGGLES. Prescription glasses are not a substitute.

4.  KNOW HOW TO USE THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. Work with a partner so that one may assist the other in the case of an emergency.

5.  DEMONSTRATE SAFE BEHAVIORS. Stay in the assigned work area. Keep the area as uncluttered as possible; only the lab manual, notebook, pencil, and experimental materials should be on the lab table. Clean up all spills or broken equipment as soon as possible. Notify the teacher of any hazards.

6.  CONDUCT ONLY THOSE EXPERIMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE TEACHER. Untested combinations of chemicals can be very dangerous and do serious damage to students and the classroom.

7.  DO NOT POINT CONTAINERS THAT HAS BEEN HEATED SUCH AS TEST TUBES OR FLASKS AT ANYONE, INCLUDING ONESELF.

8.  DISPOSE OF ALL WASTE MATERIALS SAFELY. Put all waste glass in one container, paper products in another, and chemicals as directed by the teacher.

9.  DO NOT TASTE, SMELL, OR TOUCH ANY CHEMICAL WITHOUT TEACHER PERMISSION.

10.  KEEP OUT OF MATERIAL STORAGE AREAS.

11.  DO NOT REMOVE ANY MATERIALS FROM THE CLASSROOM WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE TEACHER.

12.  DO NOT WORK ALONE IN THE FIRE TOWER or LABORATORY.

13. NO BODY PIERCING JEWELRY or SIMPLE JEWELRY SHALL BE WORN THAT MAY CAUSE POSSIBLE INJURIES.

Safety Glasses / Goggles

EVERYONE MUST WEAR SAFETY GLASSES IN SHOP / LAB AREA! Even when you are not working on a machine, you must wear safety glasses.

CLOTHES AND HAIR

·  IF YOU HAVE LONG HAIR, TIE IT UP.

·  DO NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING. Ties, scarves, and loose sleeves are prohibited.

·  REMOVE ALL JEWELRY.

·  WEAR APPROPRIATE SHOES. No open-toe sandals. Wear shoes that provide sure footing. When working with heavy objects, steel toe shoes are required.

·  Uniforms will be worn in a PROFESSIONAL manner at ALL times.

SAFE CONDUCT

·  NO HORSEPLAY. Maintain a serious attitude when working with and around machines.

·  Be aware of what is happening around you. For example, be careful not to bump into someone working near you.

·  Concentrate on what you are doing.

·  Do not hurry. If you catch yourself rushing, slow down.

·  Do not rush speeds and feeds or you may damage your part, the tools, or the machine.

MACHINING

·  IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING - ASK!!

·  DO NOT OPERATE A MACHINE UNLESS THE INSTRUCTOR IS PRESENT.

·  WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.

·  BEFORE YOU START THE MACHINE:

1.  Study the machine. Know which parts move, which are stationary, and which are sharp.

2.  Double-check that your work piece is securely held.

3.  Remove chuck keys and wrenches.

DO NOT LEAVE MACHINES RUNNING UNATTENDED!

·  KEEP HANDS A WAY FROM THE CUTTING AREA. Do not attempt to removal material while the cutter is rotating

·  DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance.

·  DISCONNECT EQUIPMENT FROM ELECTRICAL SERVICE BEFORE ADJUSTING OR CHANGING CUTTERS, BLADES, OR BITS.

·  KEEP THE WORK AREA CLEAN AND ORDERLY.

·  ITEMS NOT USED FOR INSTRUCTION ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE WORK AREA.

·  REPORT ALL INJURES TO THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY.

Practical Area

·  Do not leave the area without notifying the instructor.

·  Promptly follow the directions of the instructor

·  The roof of the tower is absolutely off limits unless instructed by the lead instructor to be on the roof with proper safety equipment.
