Aims
·  To gain basic understanding of finance through practical, real life activities.
·  To raise awareness and understanding of everyday financial matters such budgeting, savings, debts, banking options and bills.
·  To develop numeracy skills of both parents and children. By exploring a range of activities around money and finances.
·  To help children gain basic understanding of the concept of money in terms of spending and saving.
·  To make use of Technology.
Objectives - By the end of the course learners will
·  Have a basic financial knowledge and understanding of everyday financial concepts such as budgeting, making savings, bank accounts, paying bills and so on.
·  Have a basic understanding of the language of finance. Learn the meaning and usage of some vocabulary linked to budgeting.
·  Develop financial skills and competence to manage money.
·  Develop the importance of financial responsibility and know where to go for additional help with financial matters (CAB and other).
·  Build confidence in dealing with financial matters.
·  Be able to take control of spending and saving.
·  Gain a greater understanding and awareness of entitlements.
·  Be able to understand the number system and to be able to calculate using a variety of efficient mental maths strategies in everyday situations.
·  Be able to keep track of money and budget in terms of income and expenditure.
·  Be able to use a calculator to calculate income and expenditure using the 4 operations.
·  Be able to understand the reasons for making savings.
·  Be able to develop their children’s financial skills through fun money related activities and games.
·  Be able to help children understand the concept of money and how it is used and the importance of savings

Differentiation

Activities and tasks will be differentiated to allow learners to achieve at their own level and reach their potential.

Each session will provide opportunities for group and individual work to practice the underpinning skills required for this programme.

Ensure all students are able to contribute to the group.

More able students will be encouraged to lead discussions and given challenging tasks.

Additional support will be provided where needed to enable all students to gain from all the learning opportunities.

Health and safety - Risk assessments will be carried out before the start of the programme and at each session

Main elements of course content

·  Explore different ways to talk to children about money.

This scheme of work has been written as 6 sessions each lasting 3 hours and is appropriate for a wide audience of mothers, fathers, carers, single parents.

There will be a joint session with children and parents where the tutor/s will get the all involved interested in talking about money making savings in order to address the cycle of poverty and debt.

There will be opportunities to involve agencies such as CAB, debt counsellors and job centre plus advisers.

The tutors will introduce parents to websites when ever they can during the course of the programme.
