TEXTBOOK AND SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS

·  Essential Calculus with Applications, Second Edition, by Wright, Hurd, and New, Hawkes Learning Systems, packaged with student access code. A physical textbook is not required, but is recommended. Access to Hawkes Learning Systems is required.

·  Calculators are allowed and recommended for the tests and exam.

·  Use of tablet or laptop computers during tests or exams will NOT be permitted.

TEACHING METHODS

Class time will consist of lecture with discussion, examples, and opportunities to practice problems and ask questions. I appreciate your efforts in responding to my questions, and your classmates’ questions.

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES

Your grade will depend upon the points you earn in the areas listed below:

·  Homework: 50 points 12.5 %

·  Tests: 2 @ 100 points each 50 %

·  Final Exam: 150 points 37.5 %

·  Extra Credit: 50 points

Homework

Homework will be assigned through the Hawkes Learning Systems Essential Calculus software. This system includes a Lesson consisting of textbook based Instruction material, Practice exercises, and a Certify exercise requirement for each assigned section of the textbook. HLS program will grade each lesson Certification exercise as soon as you complete it. You do not need to turn in any homework to the instructor.

The Hawkes Course ID is: TULSACCESC.

Our specific course online gradebook is identified on HLS under

Instructor: Jim Novotnak

Section: Math_2523-201-30674_201430

You may want to copy/print all lesson “Certifications” for your records. Your instructor should be able to see your Certifications online, but feel free to email these Certifications to the instructor. (Printing to a file is a convenient way to save and email these documents.)

You can earn up to the full 50 points allotted for Homework by completing the Certification requirement on up to 50% of all lessons. You can see your scores through the HLS system as you complete assignments, and the Blackboard Grade Book will occasionally be updated showing your progress.

Textbook section Certification assignments have specific due dates which are based on our schedule through the course. You can work on assignments after the due date, but doing the homework as the course proceeds will best prepare you for the tests and final exam.

Tests

There will be 2 tests over the course of the semester, one for chapters 2-4, and one for chapters 5-7. Each is worth 100 points (25%) of your course grade. See the calendar at the end of the syllabus for dates.

Tests will be taken in class on paper covering pre-announced chapters of the textbook. You will not be allowed to use laptops, tablets, notes, books, or classmates’ help during tests. Calculators will be allowed, but not shared. A standard textbook table of derivative and integral formulas will be provided.

You will enter your answers on the test itself, and they should be identified by being circled. You may want to bring scratch paper to work the problems. You can turn in your scratch paper and possibly get partial credit for questions you did not get correct, if your work is partially correct and readable.

Final Exam

There will be a comprehensive final exam in class on paper.

Extra Credit

You can earn up to 50 points of extra credit for the course by completing the Certifications for between 50% and 100% of the HLS Certification sections.

Grading Scale

Your final grade will be based upon the percentage score you have accumulated.

A: 89.5 – 100%

B: 79.5 – 89.4%

C: 69.5 – 79.4%

D: 59.5 – 69.4%

The Final Exam cannot be made-up.

Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

·  Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;

·  Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;

·  Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;

·  Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester.

Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.
