INTERMEDIATE FRENCH THROUGH CINEMA - 210.208 (21) – SUMMER 2015

Welcome to the intensive summer version of Intermediate French II! You will develop the four communication skills, (speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing) through multimedia materials and will be exposed to various aspects of French culture while reviewing grammar systematically.

This course requires an average of 2 hours of work per contact hours in class: it is essential that you have time to work on French 4 hours for each day of class.

GRADING. Determined by varied exercises over the semester according to the following chart:

Oral part: / 2 pronunciation exercises / = 10%
(30%) / 2 interviews / = 20%
Written part: / Homework (exercises, journal entries) / = 10%
(60%) / 2 quizzes / = 20%
2 compositions (written in class, then re-written) / = 20%
1 final exam / = 10%
(10%) / CLASS PARTICIPATION AND PROGRESS / = 10%

REQUIRED MATERIAL:

Textbook: EN AVANT! by Anderson, Golato, & Blatty, 2011 or 2012 (hardcover)

+ Access to the online workbook (Centro.)

Additional readings and course material will be provided in class and/or on Blackboard, and movies for the course will be put on reserve at MSE library.

POLICIES: You are allowed 1 day of absence (for any reason) over the course of the session. Unjustified absences beyond the 1 allowed will lower your final grade.

Due to the fast pace of this course, please note that there is NO MAKE-UP exam, except for serious reason.The Summer Programs should be notified of any prolonged absence for sickness or other serious reason. Your instructor will schedule a make-up only if she is properly informed of your absence.

LATE ASSIGNMENT is penalized. Missing work = F.

LINGUISTIC OBJECTIVES in INTERMEDIATE FRENCH II (201.208)

By the end of the second summer session, you should be able to:

Communicative SKILLS / OBJECTIVES / HOW to ACHIEVE them
LISTENING
COMPREHENSION / * understand 90% of each class session;
* understand basic questions of a near-native speaker in a casual conversation;
* understand (without subtitles) up to 40% of the French in a movie that you have watched before with English subtitles;
* understand the main content of a 2-minute video clip. / 1/ BE in CLASS!
2/ Practice all the audio exercises from En Avant! on Centro: listen to them several times and repeat the French sentences;
3/ Work carefully on the weekly “Film Assignment”;
4/ After class, practice all video clips: repeat selected French sentences until you can say them with fluency;
5/ Use your instructor’s office hours for conversation and clarifications;
6/ Use the “radio/TV” links on Blackboard.
SPEAKING / * express yourself in class using a variety of tenses, pronouns and vocabulary;
* speak without major pronunciation mistakes that would impede comprehension (a slight accent is normal);
* sustain a 3-minute casual conversation in French with a near-native speaker using a variety of grammatical structures / 1/ BE in class to practice!
2/ Listen to the audio files on Blackboard to practice your pronunciation;
3/ Practice all audio exercises on Centro until you can say them fluently;
4/ Study and review regularly each chapter’s vocabulary and your “petit calepin”;
5/ Study and review regularly grammatical structures in each chapter; learn the examples by heart! Complete all assigned exercises on Centro and redo them later.
6/ Use your instructor’s office hours for conversation
READING / * understand the main content of a one-page French text without dictionary / 1/ Read carefully all the assigned texts -more than once!
2/ Add useful words and expressions you encounter in your readings to your “petit calepin” - review them regularly!
WRITING / * write 10 lines of French:
- without dictionary
- making only minor errors
- being able to use the present, “passé composé”, “imparfait”, future, conditional, and subjunctive. / 1/ Write regularly according to the syllabus;
2/ Study grammatical structures regularly: read the textbook first and complete all assigned exercises on Centro. Redo them later.
