He hadn’t enjoyed babysitting at all. / There was going to be a concert in town in July, and his favorite band was playing. / I don’t like to pay interest! I’ll be on vacation from June 20 through June 29. / She sold cold drinks. The salt made the animals thirty. / “I would never make it that expensive. Does fifteen dollars sound OK?”
He had offered to pay Andy, but Andy said he’d work for free. / Andy couldn’t think of anyone who might loan him the money. / So those are the days you’ll need to work. / Kittens chased string and puppies fetched sticks near the salt lick. / Andy knew that Mr. Thornton would be going on vacation soon.
Mr. Thornton was getting older, and he needed a helper to pull weeds. / Finally, Andy tried to think of ways he could work for his money. / “Andy, you did a wonderful job!” Mr. Thornton exclaimed. / The animals also brought their coins. / Andy thought about what he really liked to do.
I was just sitting here thinking that I should ask for help. / He decided to ask his big sister, Liz for advice. / “That sounds exciting,” Mr. Thornton replied. / Pinky the pig rolled past on her roller states. / Do you have any ideas how I can earn money to pay for my share of the ticket?”

Davis stacked his ten quarters, seven dimes, eleven nickels, and thirty-seven pennies / He added the stacks to find the value. / The corner store needed someone to deliver newspapers on Saturdays. / On the fifth Saturday, Davis and Mom visited the pet store. / Davis wished he had a million dollars to spend. He wanted to buy every dog toy!
Every week the man at the store gave Davis a check. / Every month the money in the bank earned interest. / Soon Davis had enough money to buy his dog. / Davis bought a collar and leash for his dog. / All day long Davis thought about dogs. Davis dreamed of dogs every night too.
Buddy, a furry brown and white puppy, came to live with Davis, Mom, and Dad. / At last Davis had a dog of his own. / “Will a dog cost a thousand dollars?” asked Davis. / Mom followed on her bicycle. / I can do that! Davis thought.
“No. You’ll need about seventy dollars,” Dad said. / Davis knew that $4.12 was not enough money to buy a dog. / He would have to earn more. I need to get a job, he thought. / How much have you saved? / Davis put the checks in a savings account at the bank.

Then Mr. Grim arrived with a very rich dessert, but the goose had had enough. / Every day you invent some silly plan to get me to lay more eggs. / Maybe you’ll take this egg to the bank, or maybe you’ll call a stockbroker and invest this egg in the stock market. / The goose shook her head, reached into her nest, and pulled out another glittering egg. / It was a beautiful place to live, and Mr. Grim should have been happy.
So the goose ate the bacon and eggs and drank the coffee. / The next morning the goose was reading a newspaper when a large, toothy dog came bounding over the hill. / The goose caught her breath and smoothed her feathers. / Mr. Grim took the egg, but he didn’t go to the bank and open a savings account. / The goose reached into her suitcase and pulled out a glittering golden egg.
Over the years, the goose earned money in the stock market. / The goose tapped her foot and struggled to hold her temper. / The goose took a few more breaths and tried her best to calm down, but it was no use. / There are many ways for you to invest these golden eggs so that you earn more money. / A few seconds later, he opened the door again and peeked out.
And every day when she laid a golden egg, she called her stockbroker and asked him to invest wisely for her. / “Oh my!” screamed the goose, jumping so high that she lost some of her feathers. / “Please don’t leave!” Mr. Grim said. “Where will you go? You won’t find a more beautiful home than my yard. / “Yeah, sure,” said Mr. Grim, but he didn’t mean it. / Mr. Grim grunted. “I though that if I fed you well, you might lay more eggs,” he said.
