Robert E. Mitchell Obituary

Longtime Huntington resident, businessman, and community leader Robert (Bob) E. Mitchell passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on March 2, 2017 in Jupiter, Florida after a brief illness.

On the day after Pearl Harbor, Bob enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a Pilot and Airplane Commander of B-17s and B-29s. He flew for the First Photo Reconnaissance Group assigned to the 20th Air Force Unit during World War II.

Bob founded Mitchell Cadillac Oldsmobile, Inc. in Huntington, NY in 1958 and was an automobile dealer for 50 years. He was President of the Greater NY Auto Dealers Association, a Master Cadillac Dealer, President of the National Cadillac Dealer Council and a member of the General Motors President’s Advisory Council.

Bob was involved in many community and charitable organizations. He was President of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, The United Fund of Huntington, The Huntington Arts Council, The Red Cross of Huntington, a member of the Board of Trustees of Dowling College and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport.

He and his wife of 59 years, Antoinette (Anne), were members of Huntington Country Club, Huntington Crescent Club, Huntington Yacht Club, The Club at Admirals Cove, Palm Beach Yacht Club, Coral Ridge Country Club and the Deep Sea Club in Montauk, NY.

Bob is survived by: his wife Antoinette; his five children Cynthia Kopprasch (Robert), Janet Mitchell, Michael Mitchell (Kathleen), James Mitchell, Patricia Posillico (Joseph K.); his five grandchildren Peter Mitchell, Christine Kopprasch (Eric Cornell), Daniel Mitchell, Chelsea Meyers, Carolyn Kopprasch; and his great-grandson Robert Cornell.

A private interment will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Riverside Park Memorial in Jupiter, FL.
