Resilience

January

4th grade

Estimated Time: 30 Minutes

Materials: Please provide these for your students.

J  1 Bouncy ball

J  1 rubber band

J  1 memory foam (stress ball) or something similar

Introduction:

Definition of Resilience- The ability to recover or adjust easily to misfortune or change.

Put into simpler words and discuss

Pass out materials for demonstration to three students, one to each.

-First student bounces the ball

-Second student stretches the rubber band

-Third student squeezes memory foam

-Discussion on how each demonstration relates to resilience

Class Discussion:

J  Give an example of a time when a person has used resilience (i.e. after loosing a game, scraping a knee, etc…) Then ask students about a time when they had an experience where they used resilience. Have them tell how they “bounced back” and why it helped them.

J  Please share how you have shown resilience in your life.

Class Activity:

·  Put class into groups of four

·  Pass out scripts to each group

·  Let them practice for 5-10 minutes

·  Let the students perform the skit in front of the class

o  Talk about how the skits show resilience.

Questions (if extra time):

·  How would you describe resilience?

·  Has anyone experience resilience in school? If so, how/ what type?

1ST SKIT

A pitcher does not do so well in his first game. He is very down and receives encouragement from those around him. He decides to practice harder and not to be scared of pitching again. His team, coach, & family encourage him and he does well the next game.

2ND SKIT

At the beginning of your school year, you expected to make an A in a particular class. As time progressed, you started to slack off and your grades started to reflect that. Towards the end of the year, you had the chance to improve your grades. You were able to improve your grade bringing it back up to an A.

3RD SKIT

You have always wanted the leading role in your school play. You decided to try-out this year. At try-outs you gave it all you had, but you did not receive the part that you wanted. How can you show resilience?

4th SKIT

A teacher passes out a major class project and asks everyone to separate into groups of two. Your best friend picks someone else instead of you. How will you maintain a good relationship with your friend? What will you do?
