Participating Resellers All SMART education resellers are authorized by SMART to sell SMART (not the Foundation) products to K–12 or higher education institutions or both. A SMART education reseller can help you determine the best solution for your needs, assist with the completion of your Grant application and coordinate the delivery and setup of your products. For a list of SMART education resellers in your area, visit www.smarterkids.org/k12/dealers and select from the resellers annotated with either K–12 or H.Ed. (indicating the education level they are authorized to support).

Reseller Preference The Grant review and approval process requires that you designate a preferred reselling partner (PRP). Your PRP is a specific SMART education reseller authorized by the Foundation and SMART Technologies Inc. to fulfill your Grant. You will be required to purchase from your designated PRP when you want to use your Grant. You may specify the PRP with whom you prefer to work by naming a PRP on your Grant application. If you do not name a PRP on your application, the Foundation will work with you to have one appointed. The Foundation and SMART work together to ensure that each PRP appointed will offer the highest level of service and support to the Grant recipient.

Evaluation Criteria Applicants must submit a completed Grant application that includes a written description of their intended use of the SMART products. A Grant application committee will evaluate applications and award Grants at its sole discretion.

Program Deadline Applications for a 2005–2006 SMARTer Kids Grant may be submitted to the Foundation at any time prior to midnight, September 30, 2006. Grant applications will be processed and Grants awarded as received. Grant recipients have until October 31, 2006, to use their Grants, after which time their 2005–2006 Grants will expire. However, Grant applications received between August 1, 2006, and September 30, 2006, for which a Grant has been approved, but not used, will be automatically reprocessed and approved by the Foundation using the new guidelines for the 2006–2007 Grant year.

Grant Notification The Foundation will use reasonable effort to notify you of the approval of your Grant application within 5 working days for Grant applications received online and within 15 working days for Grant applications received by fax or mail. If awarded, this notification will state your Grant approval number and your PRP. At the same time, the Foundation will notify your PRP. The PRP will contact you to discuss your SMART product requirements and assist you in utilizing your Grant.

Product Quantity Use your best judgment to choose the number of products for which you apply. Should your institution wish to purchase more units than are approved for your Grant, your PRP will work with the Foundation to have your Grant amended without further paperwork from you.

Additional Funding The SMARTer Kids Grant for SMART Products program is funded by local and international sponsors of the SMARTer Kids Foundation. A SMARTer Kids Grant can be used to leverage opportunities for grants from other sources. Grant recipients are encouraged to seek matching grants that will further reduce the cost of purchasing SMART products for their institution. Red Oak Elementary School

SMARTer Kids Grant

I am so proud to nominate my school, Red Oak Elementary for the SMARTer Kids Grant. Our school district, in Oak Park, California is on a mission. “The mission of the Oak Park Unified School District is to provide students with a strong foundation for learning, which meets the challenge of the present and of the future through a balanced education which includes academic achievement, personal growth, and social responsibility.” What better way to help our students achieve this great task than through the use of advanced technology in the classroom.

As part of a technology class for my Master’s Program at California State University Northridge, I have been asked to complete research on how technology can improve student achievement. Throughout the research process, the use of SMART Boards has been introduced. SMART Boards in our classrooms would be one of the best tools a teacher could have to motivate and energize students, along with all of the SMART brand products.

There are so many ways that a SMART Board would be helpful at our school. Not only would it be useful in the upper grades, but in the primary grades as well. One important way this technology would be used is with our special needs and English Language Learners. Instead of these students copying down notes from lectures, all of the information they need can be sent right to the computer and printed for them, what a blessing that would be.

In Language Arts, we would use SMART Boards for concept mapping, making class BIG books, creating “review books” to study with. We could also record student presentations and record short movies on some of our core curriculum that may not be the most “interesting” to read.

In Math, Smart Boards would be excellent in lieu of manipulatives and simulations. Concepts such as area and perimeter could be taught so much more easily. Students could easily see the difference and compare and contrast shapes and patterns as well. So many students are visual learners and this technology would help them understand more advanced mathematical concepts with ease.

What about comparing maps in Social Studies? The SMART Board would allow our students access to so much information that is not available in their school textbooks. We could compare and contrast exploration routes, battle sites, and cultural movements, just to name a few. Students would create timelines and even be able to take virtual field trips, which would make learning so much more authentic and enjoyable.

SMART Boards would also be a great tool for writing. Teachers could easily help students proofread and edit work. SMART Boards would additionally be helpful to write class stories, daily messages, and journals.

I’m sure that you are well aware of the endless possibilities and hours and learning and joy that would come from teachers using SMART Boards in the classroom. Thank you so much for your consideration in helping our school exceed our goals and keep Oak Park “a place where children can grow.”
