Sol-Tech have 3 scheduled open days during the year where applicants have the opportunity to apply for studies via the “first application” form (FORMS7-10-1). They may also write (and pass) the standardised selection test (FORMS7-10-3) on these days before they are allowed to register for any program. They can also, upon prior appointment, write the selection test on days that are specifically scheduled by Sol-Tech for that purpose.

·  4 certified copies of highest school qualifications

5.1.1.  GUIDELINES TO DETERMINE THE POINT OF ENTRY INTO A PROGRAM:

(a Pass-mark in the standardised selection test will always be a prerequisite)

STUDENTS WITHOUT A MINIMUM OF GRADE 9:

Sol-Tech do not provide any training on this level. Prospective students may apply at their nearest FET College to enter for their NCV program (level 1 to 4, where level 4 equal grade 12). They may also make an application to do distance learning through Breinlyn, Moria, Nukleus, Intec ,IMPAK, etc. to obtain their grade 10 certificate. No entry into any any program at Sol-Tech without the minimum of a grade 9. Consider in advance which subjects will be more beneficial for studies at Sol-Tech, as maths and science will always be a pre requisite.

STUDENTS WITH A GRADE 9 BUT WITHOUT A GRADE 10:

Students may apply for enrolment at Sol-Tech for the bridging course. Five subjects need to be taken and pass with a minimum of 50%, Before students can be promoted and advance to N1. If students fail in any one of the subjects, the full course need to be repeated. The implication is that the overall duration of the study-period will be extended with another 13 weeks.

STUDENTS WITH A GRADE 10 OR 11, BUT WITHOUT A GRADE 12 CERTIFICATE:

The national exit-level in mainstream education is grade 9 or grade 12. No acknowledgement is given to grade 10 or grade 11 in terms of N1 or N2. All students start with the bridging course. Five subjects need to be taken and pass with a minimum of 50%, Before students can be promoted and advance to N1. If students fail in any one of the subjects, the full course need to be repeated. The implication is that the overall duration of the study-period will be extended with another 13 weeks.

STUDENTS WITH A GRADE 12 BUT WITH MATHS LITERACY AND WITHOUT SCIENCE: (GENERAL GRADE 12)

No acknowledgement for any subjects and students need to enrol for the bridging course. Five subjects need to be taken and pass with a minimum of 50%, Before students can be promoted and advance to N1. If students fail in any one of the subjects, the full course need to be repeated. The implication is that the overall duration of the study-period will be extended with another 13 weeks. If a student have a pass-mark of minimum 40% for Engineering Graphics and Design, recognition can be given for the mechanical courses at Sol-Tech (Diesel, Fitter and Turner, Toolmaker) Students need to apply at DHET for formal recognition.

STUDENTE WITH AN ACADEMIC GRADE 12, BUT NO TECHNICAL SUBJECTS:

Students need a pass-mark of 40% or more to get any recognition for subjects (Maths and science) and to be able to enter for N1. Without the minimum of 40%, students start with the bridging course. Indien die skoolvakke nie met 40% en meer geslaag is nie, begin studente by N1. Students can get recognition for a maximum of 2 subjects at DHET at N3 level. Another 2 subjects need to be taken to be able to obtain a 4-subject N3 certificate. These subject need to be taken on N1, then N2, before it can be taken on N3 level. The package need to include the relevant trade theory subject. Students must make an inquiry about the N4, N5 and N6 subjects to take to be able to complete the government ticket. (ANEXURE B)

STUDENTS WITH A TECHNICAL GRADE 12:

If students have obtained 40% or more in their subjects, they can get recognition from DHET at N3 level. If they want to convert the subjects to N3, DHET will only give recognition to 2 subjects. The other 2 subjects need to be completed at N3 level. With a technical grade 12 and 40% or more pass-mark in the subjects, students can immediately start with training in the workshops, on condition that the certificate must include the relevant trade theory. No recognition will be given to Diesel trade theory on grade 12 level, as the curriculum is not addressed satisfactory in the subject “Mechanical Technology”. Students will start from N1 with Diesel trade theory. Students must be in possession of a N2 certificate to consider for placement at an employer. Students without the minimum of 40% will only be allowed to register for N1. If students fail their N1 and N2 subjects, they will be allowed to move conditionally to the workshops, but students and parents will take written cognisance of the fact that students might forfeit the opportunity tp get a placement, as most of the employers require a minimum of N2 for a placement. Students without a N2 certificate also run the risk to not succeed in their workshop training and as such lost the opportunity to qualify as an artisan.

STUDENTS WITH N-QUALIFICATIONS:

Students without the relevant trade theory need to start at N1 with the trade theory. If the student hold a N1 certificate, but not a N2, he need to enter for N2. If the student have a N2 certificate with the relevant trade theory, he can directly enter the workshop training program. Students in possession of a N3 certificate may enter at any FET College for N4, N5 and N6 to be able to enter for Government ticket studies. (Qualified Engineer). All prescribed subjects (Anexure B) must be passed with a minimum of 50% to be able to enter the government ticket exams. Students will also need a qualification in a relevant trade with minimum of 1 to 3yers practical experience after completion of the initial trade qualification. They will also need experience in mining or factory plant maintenance. Enquiries for entry to the government ticket as a mechanical or Electrical Engineer can be made to: www.veaseys.co.za See Anexure B for compulsory subjects.

5.2.  SOL-TECH TRAINING MODEL

[See Annexure A for graphic explanation]

A once-of registration fee of R1500-00 and a seating fee of R3000-00 is payable with registration, only after successful completion of the selection test..

PHASE 1

A Prospective student with a minimum of grade 9 may apply to enter for a study program at Sol-Tech, on condition that the standardised selection test is passed. Such a student will normally start with the bridging course, but depending on his/her qualifications, can enter at various points in the program (see explanation at 5.1.1 of this document). Sol-Tech is registered at Umalusi and DHET as private College for Further Education and Training and provide training in N1 and N2. The training period for N1 and N2 are 13 weeks respectively, including the National Exams. There are 4 prescribed subjects on each N-level to succeed in. All fees for the first instalment need to be paid in advance (N1, N2 w-practical 1). The fees need to be paid, not later than the first week of training and students who fail to adhere to this requirement will not be allowed to continue his/her studies at Sol-Tech. After successful completion of each N-level, the DHET will initially issue a statement of results for subjects passed, and afterwards issue a certificate. All the prescribed subjects need to be passed before a student may apply for his/her final section 13 trade test.

PHASE 2

Admittance to the workshop training program depend on the successful completion of a N2 certificate. If a N2 certificate is not successfully completed, conditional exemption may be granted to enter the workshop program. When the first point of entry into the program is the workshop phase, the registration and seating fee need to be paid as well, or proof of bank financing need to be provided. Financing may be through FNB, Intelento or any other finance institution. If students fail to complete their course in the pre-scheduled time, additional fees of R350-00 per day will be payable if the period don’t exceed 4 weeks. If the period of additional training exceed 4 weeks, a minimum amount of R2200-00 per week will be payable. If the student, for example, have to complete an extra 5 weeks of training, the student’s account will be credited with an additional R11000-00.

PHASE 3

The total amount of workplace experience (on-job training) that a student will require for the completion of his/her apprenticeship contract at a merSETA accredited workplace, directly after the successful completion of the institutional training at Sol-Tech, is 59 weeks at the minimum. Ajani is the placement agency of Sol-Tech and facilitates the process to get students placed at approved employers. This is a free-of-charge service and students may raise complaints when not satisfied with the treatment at the employer/workplace. If any student happens to know about possible employers where Ajani can place students for on-job training, they are requested to inform Ajani about such vacancies. If any employer are prepared to take in a student without the required N2 qualification and sign an apprenticeship contract with him/her, both the contractor/employer and the student must be aware of the fact that the contract may expire before the student get the opportunity to write a section 13 test. On the other hand the student may choose to first complete re-assign for his/her N2 studies at Sol-Tech prior to any placement at any employer through Ajani, or prior to the signing of any official apprenticeship contract with an employer.

PHASE 4

Prior to any application for a final trade test, all the minimum requirement need to be adhere to. This include the successful completion of the relevant N2 (with the required trade theory), successful completion of the workshop-campus program, the successful completion of the prescribed logbook and the minimum time on-job training in the field, and the required evaluation for preparation training if the student want to apply through Sol-Tech (Ajani) for the section 13 trade test preparation. The preparation time will vary from student to student, and the additional cost will be R300-00 per day. On average the time needed for preparation is at the minimum 3 weeks. Student are free to choose any other private accreditation centre to do their preparation and final trade test. All fees at Sol-Tech exclude trade test preparation and trade testing. Sol-Tech is not registered to examine the final section 13 trade test.

PHASE 5

The final trade test may be done through the National trade Test Centre (Indlela) or any accredited private test centre. The final section 13 red-seal qualification will be issued by DHET and the Seta, and not by Sol-Tech. Although it is a National qualification, certain countries like Australia, the UK and parts of Europe acknowledge this qualification. Sol-Tech have no control whatsoever regarding the time-frame by which the final certificate get issued by the DHET/Seta.
