TITLE: Staff Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner PAY GRADE: 10

FLSA: Exempt

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Obtains medical histories and performs complete and/or appropriate examination, orders laboratory tests, xrays and treatment programs under the supervision of a Staff Physician in an assigned area for patients of all ages. Areas include one or more of the following: South Side Center, East Side Center , Grand View Center, Outreach Project and Primary Health Center – Marshalltown.

Responsible to Primary Health Care, Inc. Medical Director.

The physician assistant/nurse practitioner will be credentialed by the credentials committee and the scope of services provided by the PA/NP will be defined at that time.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Clinical Duties

1. Provides primary medical care to the Primary Health Care, Inc. patient population.

2. Evaluates and treats patients in all ambulatory and inpatient areas stated above providing continuity of patient care.

3. Writes medical orders in each assigned area, provides primary medical treatment.

4. Provides nighttime, weekday or some weekend and holiday call coverage as part of work schedule. Carries a pager and returns to assigned area for patient care when necessary.

5. May make home visits, nursing home visits, and conducts examinations at Outreach Project clinics and other designated sites as required and/or directed by physician supervisor.

6. Provides patient and family education and counseling.

7. May participate in training of medical students, nurse practitioner and physician assistant students as requested.

Medical Administrative Duties necessary for good patient care and satisfying accreditation requirements.

1. Maintains complete medical records, including dictating history, physical exams, and discharge summaries.

2. Completes appropriate progress notes in each assigned work area plus other special patient forms in different areas of the hospital.

3. Completes appropriate correspondence, phone calls and dictated letters to patients and referring physicians.

4. Check medical records box for lab slips and records in a timely fashion.

Administrative Duties

1. Carries out medical administrative functions necessary for quality patient care and compliance with accreditation requirements.

2. Participates in committee activities and has responsibilities commensurate with experience. May participate in Quality Assurance and Risk Management activities and committee work in assigned areas.

3. Attends Department/Unit meetings as assigned.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

1.  Patient satisfaction surveys will reflect an 85% approval rate.

2.  Quality of care and compliance indicators will meet a threshold of at least 85%.

3.  Visit productivity will be maintained at or above PHC’s minimum standards.

4.  Documentation will support visit charges 100% of the time.

5.  Demonstrates and supports service excellence behaviors 100% of the time.

6.  Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence. This will be demonstrated by the completion and documentation (Employee Development Record) of all competencies; unit specific skills, annual inservices, corporate compliance; 95% of the defined time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Physician Assistants must be a graduate of an AMA approved Physician Assistant program and/or certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.

2. Physician Assistants must be licensed by the Iowa Board of Professional Licensure.

3. Nurse Practitioners must be a graduate of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.

4. Nurse Practitioners must licensed by the Iowa Board of Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.

4. Ability to consistently meet the department work schedule as designated.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. One year of clinical experience in appropriate field of medicine.
