Paulette Carlson – Use of the iPad in my elementary classroom (4th grade)

Technology use of the iPad and website:

EduSites = School website where you can add pages as you see fit, can and should be useful to students and parents.

Math
- Facts
- book pdf
- resource guides
All of the above I put on my web page and further instruct the students to download.
I also use ActivInspire for Math. At times, I use the document camera to display a worksheet or pull up any document and use ActivInspire in ‘annotate over desktop’ so then I can write on the screen over the worksheet…or the students will come up and do that.
ActivInspire has several Math Tools that are useful to use. / APP:
Good Notes app
(Facts practice – timed test)
Pdf’s can be brought in and students can write on it (fill in answers or jot notes)
Educreation’s app
Students use this app to do our Example and Practice problems and flip their screen when done.
I also use this app for an EXIT TICKET question for a quick check of understanding of subject matter.
Facts apps for daily practice:
Mathopolis
Math Facts Master
Science
- Book pdf
- audio
- references’ pdfs / APP:
iBooks
Dropbox (I created a class dropbox for students to have access to audio without wifi.)
Class Photos of activities throughout the year / OneDrive
Plenty of storage, create files for organization.
Add the link to your web page.

EduSocial = blog where you can have more than one blog. I have more than one, but only one for 4th grade. If I were to do it over, I would split it into my two subject areas. One would be for Math, and the other would be for Science / Health.

With the blog, you can insert assignments via pdf, insert videos, photos, etc.

Students access it from my webpage, after that I have them ADD to HOMESCREEN on their iPad both my web page and the class blog.

Students will bring the pdfs into either iBooks or Good Notes (if I am having them record answers right into GoodNotes.

Apps that I use for student presentation creations are:

Book Creator
Import video and music, and record speech within the app. Text boxes may be added, with several fonts to choose from. Exports as a pdf and EASY to use!
Use this one the most for presentation creations. / Educreations
Can do a lot of what you can do in BookCreator, but you can record it into a slideshow. In this use, students use it to create their slide show for our Science Career Museum. As mentioned in Math, we use it daily, and can scroll to next screen for next problem.

Microscope

AirMicro
Handheld wireless microscope for ipads. You create a wifi connection and then it sends the captured ongoing view onto each students ipads.
Students can screen shot these and use the photos in presentations if needed.
I have 10x and 50x magnification scopes.

Other:

I like to use the blog with uploading the lesson (replace the hardcopy worksheet) and have students record their responses into their notebook.

Students use ipad camera and video, youtube app (via my blog), and dropbox class account (haven’t had to use it; since I am able to put all docs onto web or blog).

Students ADD to HOME SCREEN sites that I want them to have access to (My webpage and the Class Blog)

We use other apps for practicing skills. In Math, we use Facts apps for 5-10 minutes. We have several apps on student iPad that are for uses throughout the year or for students to use outside of school to better themselves with educational skills.

I have some apps on the iPad that are Memory or Science Physics that are more for fun….they are allowed to only do those at home, not during free time.

Facetime is used when a student has been absent with illness or hospitalized. This way they are still getting the instruction and are able to contribute in class or ask questions.
