1. Caution! Music may wilt your leaves. In 1969, Dorothy Retallack ran some experiments with plants and music. She proved music affect the growth of plants. In one test loud rock music greatly stunted the growth of corn, squash, and several flowers. In another test several of the plants grew tall, but their leaves were extremely small. Also they needed water, and their roots were very short within several weeks all of the marigold in one experiment died. Identical healthy flower, however, bloomed nearby. These flowers had been listening to classical music.

2. In 1928, a farmer was planting horseradishes in a field in Petersburg, West Virginia. He noticed a greasy, shiny stone. He picked it up and brought it home as a curiosity piece. Ten years later he made a startling discovery. The stone was a 32-carat diamond. Wow! Imagine how he felt.

Diamonds, however, are not necessarily rare in the United States. The Eagle diamond weighs 16 carats and was found in Wisconsin a few years ago. Other large stones have also been discovered in Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. The largest diamond found in the United States weighs 40 carats. It was mined near Murfreesboro, Arkansas.

3. Gee! In 1937, real life almost imitated the movies. The earth came close to a massive destruction from outer space. An asteroid called Hermes came within 500,000 miles of us. Had Hermes hit our planet, it could have created a crater 100 miles wide. It also could have caused a massively destructive tidal wave. According to probability, three large asteroids will strike earth within the next million years. You should not, however, be afraid of this or any other attacks from outer space. For one thing, a million years is a long time. For another things, asteroids can now be stopped. Nuclear devices can destroy them in space before they strike.
