Parenthetical Citations

In general the author’s name and page number are put in parentheses with the author’s name providing the link to the works cited page, but there is no need to put the author’s name or provide a works cited if you are only referring to one work.

Some examples:

Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263).

Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263).

“Romantic poetry combines intellect and feeling.” (270)

Citation of an idea rather than a quote

Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263).
