Book Discussion Club
(Prince William County, VA, 06/24/2013…Come join Chinn Park Chats: A Monday Afternoon Book Discussion Club on July 8th at 1:00 p.m. at the Chinn Park Regional Library. The group will discuss "The Painted Veil" by W. Somerset Maugham.
In 1920s London, beautiful young Kitty Garstin, raised to expect an impressive marital match, refuses a number of suitors. Several years pass and, in desperation, Kitty marries shy, awkward Walter Fane, the colonial bacteriologist and M.D. in Hong Kong. Walter loves Kitty passionately, but Kitty finds Walter boring and unexciting. Kitty strays with the dashing, very married Charles Townsend, the assistant colonial secretary. When Walter discovers Kitty’s betrayal, he forces her to accompany him to cholera- ridden mainland China. Kitty is frightened, but Walter will divorce her if she doesn’t go. What will happen to Walter and Kitty when they reach Mei-tan-fu? Join us to discuss this classic work.
