COURSE OUTLINE
OAT 143E - PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION (1 credit)
DESCRIPTION:
Facilitates employment search by emphasizing professional techniques and standards in the preparation of application forms, resumes, cover letters, and employment interviews.
PREREQUISITES:
OAT 20B or OAT 21 or OAT 121 with a grade of C or better or 30 wam by touch and completion of or concurrent enrollment in ENG 21 or ENG 22 or equivalent with a grade of C or better.
GOALS:
LCC Academic Development Plan Goals: 1.1 Improve student writing. 1.3 Develop oral communication skills. 1.4 Increase emphasis on critical thinking. 1.5 Improve student reading comprehension. 1.7 Integrate workplace skills based on feedback from employers into all courses. 1.9 Improve student skills in information technology.
Course Goals:
1. To understand the job search process.
2. To prepare for an employment interview.
COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand and use appropriate job search skills.
2. Write an acceptable letter of application.
3. Prepare a resume.
4. Properly complete a job application form.
5. Demonstrate correct interview techniques during an actual employment interview.
6. Describe the proper and professional way to leave a job.
EVALUATION:
1. All examinations using text and handouts will be graded as follows:
90 - 100% =A
80 - 89% =B
70 - 79% =C
60 - 69% =D
59 & below =F
2. The personal portfolio includes all components of the job search process. Grading of the portfolio will be on completeness, neatness, and organization.
3. The research project is to survey the business community on jobs available in your area of study. A required written report will be submitted on the required due date. Grading is on the instructor criteria.

ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are due at the beginning of the class. Late assignments will not be accepted for credit. Emergency cases will be reviewed individually by the instructor.
INTERVIEWS Students are required to postmark their interview information (cover letter, resume, and application form) by the assigned date. Remember to check the postage. Students are reminded to dress in business attire, arrive early, and be prepared. If you have a “blocked” telephone number, be sure to address that issue.
ACADEMIC Students are required to complete and submit their own work. Sharing files, duplicating disks, DISHONESTY copying, plagiarism, or other such acts will not be tolerated and subject to penalties including an “F “grade for the class. Refer to Academic Dishonesty in the Student Conduct Code.
