MacBook Training

1. V Drive

a. File Storage like Dropbox, has no size limit. Can only be accessed on school internet.

b. To find it make sure in the top left next to the Apple it says “Finder”. Get there by clicking on a blank desktop.

c. Click the keys “command” + “k”. Insert the following : smb://vcscdata01/facultydata$/lastnamefi

d. Choose to connect. Should ask for your password.

e. You can copy and paste all your items to the V drive. Might take some time depending on how much you have.

f. If you get a new computer you can copy and paste those files to your new computer.

g. To keep it in your Dock when you open your V Drive there is a picture next to your name on the folder. Drag that picture to the bottom right next your “Downloads” folder.

2. Force Quit

a. It will close all or chosen open applications.

b. You would want to use this when you get the “spinning beach ball” to close what is slowing you down.

c. Click the keys “command” + “option” + “esc” and then choose what you want to close.

d. Can also force quit by right clicking on the program on the Dock.

3. How to Right Click (without a mouse)

a. Two finger click on what you want.

b. Hold the “control” key and click on what you want.

c. Why would you want to right click? Close applications, delete items, copy, paste, rename files, etc…

4. Blue “bubbles” Under Dock Items.

a. Too many items running will slow down your computer.

b. Can close them by clicking on them and then clicking on their name in top right next to apple and choose “Quit…”.

c. Right click on application in Dock and choose to quit or force quit.

5. New Desktop/Full Screen

a. Two arrows in upper right hand corner of window.

b. Makes the application a new “desktop”.

6. 2 Finger Slides

a. Will scroll all windows the direction you’re sliding. Up/down and left/right.

7. 3 Finger Slides

a. Slide 3 fingers up and shows everything you have open and lets you choose which one you want to open, instead of having to minus everything.

b. Slide 3 fingers left to right and you can cycle through all desktops and widgets you have open.

8. Remove/Add Items to Dock

a. To remove items from Dock right click on item, can’t be open (blue bubble), and click on options and choose remove from Dock.

b. To add items to Dock when the item is open right click on item, choose options and choose keep in Dock. You would want to use this to keep it there instead of always looking for it.

9. Clean Up Trash and Downloads Folder

a. They are located in bottom right of Dock. If too many files are kept here it will take up space on your computer and could slow it down.

b. To empty trash can right click on trash and choose to empty trash.

c. To empty download folder right click on the folder and choose to Open “Downloads”. Once the folder is open you will have to choose everything, right click on the items, and choose to “Move Items to Trash”

10. Zooming In/Out

a. To zoom in on items such as webpages, word documents, page documents, etc… hold “command” + “+” keys.

b. To zoom out hold “command” + “-“.

c. On pictures you can “squeeze” or “extend” on track pad.

11. Have Applications Open/Not Open on Startup

a. Right click on application in Dock, click on options, and check/uncheck “Open at Login”.

b. Open “System Preferences” (gears), choose “Users & Groups”, click on lock and put in password, make sure your account is chosen on left, choose “Login Items”, and then +/- any applications you want.

12. Text to Speech Option

a. Have anything that is typed out read out loud.

b. Click “System Preferences”, choose “Dictation and Speech”, “Text to Speech” tab, check the box titled “Speak selected…”.

c. You can pick what keys that have to be pushed when something is highlighted.

d. Also can choose voices of what it sounds like when it is read and how fast something is read.

13. Updating Software

a. Click on the Apple in the top left corner and choose “Software Update”. Depending on how much you’ve updated it will look different.

b. You can check once a month, if you have App Store it “should” tell you.

14. App Store

a. This is where updates can be found.

b. Also an area, like on iPad or iPhone, where you can download free apps or buy apps for your laptop.

15. Keyboard Shortcuts

a. To highlight items click and hold and then drag over whatever you want to highlight.

b. Copy an item: “command” + “c”

c. Paste an item: “command” + “v”

d. Print an item: “command” + “p”

e. Select everything: “command” + “a”

f. Screenshot: “command” + “shift” + “3”

g. Save a document : “command” + “s”

h. Lots of others you can Google.

16. Restart Active Driver for Promethean

a. Could be the reason the touch screen is not working on Promethean Board. Light is red or touching the screen is not changing the color in top left hand corner.

b. Click on paper in top right hand corner next to wireless signal and choose to quit.

c. Search in top right (magnifying glass) for “activmgr” and click on it. This will open up the driver which should allow you to have touch screen capabilities again. If that doesn’t work check USB plug in.

17. Open in Windows Mode

a. Restart computer (make sure sound is on). When computer is restarting wait to hear the “ding” sound and hold the “option” key. Keep holding until you get a screen that gives you an option to start in Mac or Windows. All Windows machines start up very slow.
