A/C / The school is constantly visited by many different species of birds. There is a need, therefore, to study their types and note the type of prefer food by species.
Design and make a bird feeder to attract birds to the school so that we will be able to study their behavior.
Specifications:
§  Be attractive and functional
§  Be strong enough and well reinforced for stability
§  Must protect the seeds from wind and rain
§  Provide a place for birds to perch while feeding and waiting to feed
§  The design should not put birds that are feeding at risk from predators
§  Must have drinking device
§  Be neatly finished / Activity 1
Learners investigate different types of birds found in the area. They are to count how many live in the school. To learn about different types of food each species prefer and their behaviors.
Activity 2
Class brings magazines with pictures of birds and cut and paste them according to sizes, state their origin. Investigate places where they like to live.
Activity 3
Learners are to investigate different foods different birds eat. Check how they feed.
Make use of worksheets to compare how children in the olden and present days treat these birds.
Activity 4
Learners are to investigate about different bird feeders and materials used, checking their properties and how they influence the effectiveness of these products by listing advantages and disadvantages.
Activity 5
From magazines pictures, cut them out and indicate types of structures sorting them into types e.g. shell, frame and solid and explain why you say so.
Learners are to share their ideas in class.
Activity 6
They visit shop, and get pictures of these feeders
and examine different bird feeders and identify some design aspects, e.g.:
What is it for; what it looks like; what is it made of. / Activity 1, 2

Activity 7
Learners investigate by testing different materials used checking their strength, stiffness, stability, reinforcement and effectiveness.
Activity 8
Learners are to write a design brief giving specifications and constraints.
Learners are to design using drawings, Bird Feeder of their choice, using two dimensional sketches. They are to be designed according to the design brief and specifications given.
They are to use colors, enhanced with measurements.
Activity 9
Teacher makes sure that learners have the necessary resources and tools needed. Plans and organize the materials, tools for learners before they embark on the project.
Safety measures are taken care off by the teacher and learners are taught about them especially handling of tools.
Activity 10
Evaluation of products by peers and teacher, looking at the designs if they are done according to the design brief and specifications written.
Activity 11
Learners are to communicate their designs by sketches, Poster making and Project Portfolio / Activity 6

Resources: Waste material, magazines, drawing apparatus, writing material, scissors, glue, sellotape, crayons
Expanded Opportunities: 1. Give work to those faster while waiting for slower learners as per the set progress of the activity
2. Visit relevant places gathering information e.g. excursions
Reflections: All that has failed / succeeded in the lesson is benchmark for the next lessons.
