Resources and Reference Sheet

The Labor Market Information LMI/Research and Statistics Section is the official source for all employment-related data for the state, the metropolitan areas, and the individual counties. The section works directly with the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics to gather core labor market data that are comparable to information gathered nationwide.

Although we are best known for producing the unemployment rates, the scope of our services to employers and job applicants is far reaching. For example, if an employer wishing to expand or start a new business needs information on the available local labor force, including wage rates and skill levels, the LMI Research and Statistics Section can help.

Annual Workforce Report 2009

Data

The Source is the most comprehensive and user-friendly source of labor market data in the state. The interactive system contains a vast amount of information covering areas such as job demand, economic indicators, wages, census data, and education/training programs. It also provides information on nearly 92,000 Tennessee employers. Area profiles are also available by local workforce investment areas, metropolitan areas, and counties.

The Labor Market Report
This monthly newsletter contains a lead article on economic issues of importance to our readers. Current employment and unemployment statistics for the state and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) are analyzed. The newsletter includes tables and graphs of labor force information for the state, MSAs, and Micropolitan Areas. Data tables are also provided with estimated nonagricultural employment by industry, hours and earnings of manufacturing production workers, and the consumer price index.

Vets Guide 2007

Data

Business Employment Dynamics data are quarterly series of gross job gains and gross job losses statistics for the entire economy. These data track changes in employment at the establishment level, and thus provide a picture of the dynamics underlying aggregate net employment growth statistics.

Quick Tips for Using the New Source

Is this Occupation in Demand with Employers?

From the Home Page of The Source:

Under Analysis, select Occupation.

Select Labor Supply and Demand.

Step 1. Select from the LWIA list if you want a Local Workforce Investment Area and you know its number.

OR click on “Select by Map” and select either the statewide or the Workforce Investment Area map. (If you select the LWIA map you can pause your mouse over the areas to display county names.) Click on an area.

You will see the area you selected in Step 1 of the next screen.

Step 2. Leave “Annual” selected. Click on “Select One” and select “2006.”

Step 3. Click on “Advanced Search”.

In Option 1, type part of a job title or description, such as “account,” and click “Search.”

Select an occupation title and press “Continue”.

Click on the Cluster Title. Look for the term ’IN DEMAND.”

Find a Training or Education Program

From the Home Page:

Under Individuals, select “Education and Training”

Select “Training and Education Programs”

The 6 tabs have different advantages in locating training and educational programs. Each can be helpful.

The Keyword search is open. This searches both program titles and program descriptions. For example, if you type “computer” you will get a list of programs specifying computer in the title as well as others which incorporate computer training but don’t have computer in the program title.

You can search the whole state of Tennessee by entering a keyword and continuing or you can narrow your search to smaller geographic area.

To select a smaller area, click on “Tennessee.” Scroll down in the box on the left to select a type of area. Then scroll in the box on the right to select the specific area.

Using the search method in any tab, select a program. Click on the title until you get a list of the education and training providers. Select a provider to learn the certification or degree offered and/or the amount of time the program requires. Clicking on the program title again gives you the information you need to contact the provider.

Locate Potential Employers in Your Area

From the Home Page:

Under Individuals, select “Find Employers Near You.”

In the box under “Select New Area,” scroll and click “Zip Code.”

Type in your zip code and change the distance from the zip code as needed.

The tab “Quick Employer Search” is open. Type in a Keyword.

Example 1. Type “health” and press Search. This will pull up employers in the selected area providing a variety of health-related services.

Example 2. Type in the name of an employer with multiple locations in the selected area and press Search. You will see all the sites listed.

In the list of employers:

Click on the name of an employer to obtain the location and contact information.

Or check boxes at the right in the list and map the locations. Clicking on the red indicators on the map names the employer at that location.

Search for Job Openings

You can view job openings without registering. To apply for a job, however, you will need to register and sign in: on the home page, under the title ”The Source”, click on “Register and Sign in Here.” Registration is only for the purpose of facilitating your use of The Source and is not shared with any other entity.

Under Individuals select “Find a Job.”

Use the “Quick Job Search” tab.

Use the offered area, “Zip Code,” and type your zip code in the box at the right. Change the distance from the zip code as needed.

Type a keyword (part of a job title), like “computer,” and click the “Search” button.

Jobs are listed in order of their relevance to the keyword. To change the list order, click on a column heading. (Click again to reverse the order.)

For more information about a job, click on the job title.

You can apply by scrolling down to the button “Apply for this Job.” (If you have not registered and signed in, you can do so at this time.)

For jobs listed from SJB, the state job board, you will be taken directly to the State of Tennessee Job Service’s eCMATS site where you can register for their services.

For all other jobs you will be taken to the job order on the website where it originated.

Locating an Eligible Training Provider

Search for a Training Provider by using one or more of the following options:

¼  Location: Searching by 'location' will generate a list of all Certified Providers in the county chosen. Select a County:

¼  Area of Study: Searching by 'Area of Study' will generate a list of all Certified Providers in the state that offer programs or courses in a specific field.

¼  Searching by Training Provider Name: Generates an alphabetical list of all Certified Providers in the state.

¼  Training Provider Name: Searching by 'Local Workforce Investment Area' will generate a list of all Certified Providers in a specific area of the state. Our Local Area is 10.

¼  Efficiency of a Provider: Searching by multiple categories will generate a list of providers and programs within the selected categories. Under this category you may select one of the following options:
