Therapeutic Home Programmes
Key considerations in the design and use of therapeutic home programmes
This one day HSE funded workshop is specifically designed for OTs and SLTs who use home programmes in their practice and are interested to consider how to strengthen this aspect of their practice. The workshop is for OTs and SLTs who currently use home programmes in any practice area and with clients of any age.

Presenters: The workshop programme has been developed by AOTI and IASLT with close collaboration with a variety of Irish based and international professionals with expertise in this area. Key presenters include James O’Shea, Rozanne Barrow and Andrea Hasselbusch.
Andrea Hasselbusch (PhD candidate, MOccTh, PG cert Ed, Bc OT, Dip OT) is a senior occupational therapist with over 20 years of practical experience in diverse international practice and academic settings. She is currently employed as Senior Practice Fellow in Occupational Therapy at Bournemouth University, School of Health and Social Care. Andrea’s particular interest and expertise lies with occupational therapy practice with children, young people and families. She is currently completing her PhD through Bournemouth University. Her research focuses on the usefulness and effects of the School-based Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (SB-OT-PF), which was developed as part of her masters through research at Otago Polytechnic (Dunedin, NZ) while working as school-based occupational therapist for the Ministry of Education-Special Education (Auckland, NZ).
Rozanne Barrow PhD, MSc Rozanne has worked as a speech & language therapist (SLT) in acute, rehabilitation and community care contexts in the UK, New Zealand and Ireland. She has recently retired as Speech & Language Therapist Manger at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. As an SLT, she has focused on working with people following acquired brain injury to explore ways to re-engage with life in the context of communication disability. Her main focus of research has centred on investigating the experience of living life in the context of stroke and aphasia from the perspectives of people with aphasia and those around them. In addition, Rozanne has a Diploma in Executive & Leadership Coaching and is a visiting lecturer to Trinity College Dublin and an Associate Trainer for Connect – the Communication Disability Network in the UK.
James O’Shea; MA (Supervision),MA, Hdip (Ed),BSc (Psycht.), HGdip (Couns.), RPN, RGN, MACI, BACP (Reg.), MINT James is a qualified Counsellor & Psychotherapist (BACP) and Accredited Addiction Counsellor (ACI), Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Registered General Nurse (NMBI). His academic qualifications include an Honours Degree in Counselling/ Psychotherapy as well as a Postgraduate Diploma and Masters Degree in Adult Education. He also holds a Masters Degree in Supervision. James is a member of the International Network of Motivational Interviewing Trainers (MINT). He is an experienced Trainer and has worked in the Irish Health Service for 28 years.
Content
· Making the Decision to Introduce a Home Programme: Timing and Key considerations: (Motivation, Assessing Readiness and Ability, Phases of Motivation, Suitable responses/tools when motivation wanes, Managing ambivalence)
· The Design of Home Programmes: Strategies to Optimise Outcomes (What does the evidence indicate regarding design & other factors which increase success of home programmes? Top tips to consider when designing home programmes, Communication)
· Reflecting on own Practice in relation to Home Programmes: How can we improve the way we work?
· Consideration of critical elements with regard to deciding if a home programme suitable, design and implementation factors
· Development of checklist to use as a guide when making decisions with regard to home programmes
Cost: The cost to attend this workshop is €20

· OTs and SLTs who work currently use home programmes in their practice and are committed to reflecting on and considering how to improve this area of their practice
· Members and non-members of AOTI and IASLT are welcome to apply

Important Information in Relation to this workshop
· Participants will be required to submit via email, before the workshop, two samples of home programmes they have developed and used with clients.
· Participants must be open to sharing these programmes with other participants on the workshop day. A component of the afternoon session will focus on critiquing each other’s home programmes and developing strategies for how to improve programmes.
· An expected outcome of the day is that participants will develop as a group, a checklist which can be used to inform therapist’s decision making with regard to use and design of home programmes. The group will draft this with the facilitator at the workshop. This will then be circulated to participants after the workshop for consideration and feedback and finalised by AOTI and IASLT. This will then be distributed to participants and use of this tool encouraged.

· If a very large number of applications are received unsuccessful applicants may not be notified. If this occurs an update will be placed on the AOTI and IASLT website as a news item to advise that applications have been processed and successful applicants informed.
· Suitable applicants who are not allocated a place will automatically be placed on a waiting list and contacted if vacancies arise.
· If you are not offered a place at the workshop your payment will be refunded
· We may contact participants who attended the workshop to invite them to prepare a small reflection on the workshop for the AOTI or IASLT newsletter.
