Job Title Commercial Director

Reporting to Director of BMT

Areas of responsibility To provide strategic leadership for the development of sustainable income streams across Birmingham Museums Trust, supporting the growth of revenue and profit from a broad range of activities across multiple sites, including

Direct responsibility for:

·  Functions, events, catering and venue hire (conference and banqueting)

·  Café/restaurants at two main sites and all heritage sites (food and beverage)

·  Retail, product development and merchandising

·  Licensing

·  Other fees and charges

·  Leadership of the Heritage Sites

Commercial lead for driving profit from:

·  Exhibitions

·  Performance fees (admissions and schools)

·  Membership

·  Consultancy

Key responsibilities

·  Provide strategic direction for the development of sustainable income streams across BMT, including presenting papers to the Trading Board and main Board as required

·  With the SMT, contribute to planning, delivering and reporting on the work of BMT

·  Form and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and partners

·  Lead the commercial team in delivering profitable and consistently excellent services in food and beverage, conference and banqueting, retail, licensing and product development

·  Advise on, support and monitor activities that contribute to income generation in other sections of BMT

·  Ensure that BMT brand values are observed and deliver excellent customer service

Specifically:

·  Meet targets for growth in revenue and profits across all areas of Birmingham Museums Trust commercial trading, as agreed with Trading Board and main Board Trustees

·  Ensure that appropriate financial controls are in place, including EPOS systems, management reporting, and business analysis and budgeting

·  Monitor and control business overheads, identifying potential efficiencies and savings

·  Work with colleagues to identify and implement new profit-generating activities/projects

·  Implement a strategy for the financial sustainability of the heritage sites

General duties:

·  Undertake such additional tasks and responsibilities as required commensurate with skills and abilities.

·  HR: including conducting monthly performance reviews, annual appraisals and other such performance reviews as may become necessary; managing holidays, illness and other issues arising; recruitment, induction and development of all new staff members.

·  Observe all regulations and requirements relating to the duties of the post including health and safety legislation and child protection measures

·  Undertake all duties in accordance with BMT’s equal opportunities policy.

Qualification / Educated to degree level / MBA
Experience and Knowledge / Demonstrable experience in a strategic leadership role
Experience of managing complex, multi-site teams
Experience of delivering in partnership
Track record of success in a commercial environment
Extensive experience of EPOS and related finance systems
Proven delivery of complex projects and contracts, to time and budget
Management of large and multiple budgets / Commercial sector experience
PRINCE2
Interest in culture and heritage
Experience of working in the commercial arm of a charitable organisation
Skills / Leadership and teambuilding
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Team player
Commitment to customer service excellence / Ability to deal with the press/media
Knowledge of one or more languages other than English
