Job Summary/Purpose:

·  Perform and participate in the decontamination, inspection, cleaning assembling and packaging of medical/surgical material to include, but not limited to, instruments and equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials.

·  Prepare trays according to prescribed procedures.

·  Disassemble, clean, assemble and test instrumentation for proper functioning.

·  Operate steam sterilization.

·  Perform simple maintenance on equipment by use of the Bowie-Dick test packs, cleaning of filters and drains and use of biological test packs.

·  Maintain inventory of supplies and materials to include documenting usage, issuing, receiving and recording as assigned.

·  Perform multiple tasks that assist in the daily operation of all units as well as being responsible for customer service.

·  Serve as a liaison between OR manager (or Department Head) and third-party vendors for equipment/supply acquisition and the maintenance of existing equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

·  High School graduate or equivalent.

·  1-3 years of Sterile Processing experience.

·  Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Certification from IAHCSMM as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.

Essential Physical Requirements:

·  Ability to perform light to heavy work, which includes frequent lifting and positioning of patients.

·  For greater than 50 pounds it may be expected that the employee will request assistance from a co-worker for lifting and transferring.

·  Ability to stand/walk 6 to 8 hours per shift.

·  Ability to frequently bend, twist, reach, stoop and occasionally kneel and squat.

·  Ability to perform various repetitive tasks i.e., simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation (keyboard).

·  All employees within this job classification may have high-risk exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.

Position Specific Responsibilities and Competencies / Cleans used instruments and equipment according to protocols and Standard Precautions and prepares instrument trays as to sequence and type of instruments per count sheet.
Wraps/packages and sterilizes reusable instruments according to protocols.
Accurately prepares purchase requisitions for surgical supplies, instruments and equipment.
Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including state, federal, and The Joint Commission, on a continual basis.
Assures all equipment is available, set-up correctly, and functioning before use and accurately performs and documents sterility monitoring, testing and checking of sterilization as per protocol.
Active participation in hospital and departmental quality improvement initiatives.
Adheres to hospital and departmental policy for reporting and handling malfunctioning equipment.
Monitoring supplies to ensure availability of appropriate supplies for patient care and departmental operations.
Communicates effectively with the perioperative team while dealing with frequent interruptions in a high stress setting.
Participates in the development and revision of Central Service Policies and Procedures.
Documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures and is completed within shift.
Ability to navigate the clinical information systems as needed to perform job duties.
Maintains a clean and orderly environment in the perioperative department including breakroom and locker rooms.
Recognizes department problems and uses critical thinking skills to take appropriate actions.
Serves as a change agent by cooperatively adopting new processes determined through quality improvement initiatives.
Voluntarily cross-trains, covers for, and assists with other duties and departmental functions within his/her scope of practice and not covered by his/her job description.

Effectively manages costs by ensuring accurate patient charges as well as implementing cost effective practices while providing quality patient care.
Assists in departmental policy development and acquisition of new technology and procedures.
Answers telephone, responds to e-mails, and greets internal and external customers in a timely and friendly manner.
Is available at scheduled work time on scheduled day and voluntarily works during non-scheduled times as a response to departmental or hospital staffing needs.
