Workshop programme:

Session 1 – Introduction to the Library.

This introductory workshop will give you an overview of the special services the Library provides for Postgraduates. It is designed to save you time by ensuring that you know how to choose the best resources for your needs and how to find the material you need.

v Introduction to Library resources and services - how we can help you. eg Inter Library Loans, ResIN – Research Information in Newcastle.

v Newcastle University Library catalogue – using it effectively

v Research Library catalogues – COPAC, British Library

Session 2 – ResIN 1 – Research information at Newcastle

Based around our ResIN Web pages, this workshop will help you to formulate an effective search strategy in order to trace periodical articles and conference papers. In the hands-on workshop you will have the opportunity to try out some of the databases and explore our electronic journals.

v Effective search strategies

v Athens passwords

v Databases – choose from Science Citation Index, Geobase, Environmental Science, CAB Abstracts, CSA Database Collection, Scopus and more

v Electronic Journals – full text collections.

Session 3 – Using EndNote.

EndNote is a software package which is very effective in helping you to organise the references you find. You can download the results of searches in databases directly into EndNote and manipulate them in many ways. As EndNote links to Word, you will be able to use it as you write to create citations and bibliographies.

v Producing a bibliography in different citation styles

Session 4 – ResIN 2 – Research information at Newcastle Part 2.

Again using the ResIN web pages, this workshop will look at other resources which can help with your research. It will explore techniques for keeping up to date with current developments. We will look at searching the WWW effectively and also at finding grey literature and specialised resources
