Program Ideas

Crafts

1. Felt Mascots: Make them out of felt and cotton, sew them with needle and thread, can find the patterns in books. A good book with patterns is The Cute Book by Aranzi Aronzo.

2. Origami: Make paper cranes. (Legend goes that if one makes 1000 paper cranes someone can be healed or granted a wish). There are countless of other animals or objects you can make with origami.

3. Decorate a paper lantern with paint and marker. They can be bought cheaply at home wares stores or online.

4. Make a hanging koi with paper and a collage of scraps of magazine. Draw a fish on a piece of paper and cut out two pieces of paper in fish shapes. Decorate the fish with crayons, markers and scraps of magazine; hang with yarn.

5. Amigurumi or the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting stuffed animals can be a fun project for skilled club members.

6. Decorate a paper fan or parasol with paint and marker. They can be bought cheaply at Oriental Trading Company.

7. Make manga T-shirts with puff paint, fabric markers and sharpies. Also, you can buy special iron-on paper from sites such as www.hp.com and print out anime characters with an ink jet printer that you iron on T-shirts, bags etc.

8. If you can acquire a button maker, print off anime characters online and make your own personalized anime buttons.

9. Make anime shrinky dinks. Trace anime characters onto special shrinky dink paper (found at www.shrinkydinks.com) and put them in a toaster oven or heat them with hair dryers.

Food

1. Invite a Japanese chef over to demonstrate how to make food

2. Make candy sushi out of rice krispy treats, jelly candy (such as Swedish fish) and fruit roll ups. Take hot rice krispy treats, roll jelly candy into it and wrap fruit roll ups around it such as in a maki roll.

3. Be sure to have pocky and other Japanese snacks on hand when watching an anime. Let your members decide what they like the best. These Japanese snacks can now be found at large grocery stores such as Target.

4. See what food your anime club members can pick up with chopsticks. Prizes go to the most skillful member.

Other

1. Watch Anime Music Videos (AMV’s). Search through YouTube to find many. You don’t need screening permission to do that.

2. Create your own AMV’s and have an AMV contest.

3. Make anime art, provide materials to draw, and have an anime art contest.

4. Let the club members cosplay and dress up as their favorite anime characters. Let them act out scenes from their favorite anime and record it.

5. Take a survey of your club member’s favorite anime and characters so you know what interests them.

6. Bring in a Japanese language speaker to teach some words.

7. Bring in a local manga artist to teach the basics of drawing manga.

8. Teach your club members the Japanese game Go. Join the American Go Association at www.usgo.org to compete in tournaments and have other benefits.

9. Learn some of the dances from such popular anime as Haruhi Suzumiya.

10. Learn how to do some of the moves from popular fighting shows such as Naruto.

11. Have an activity themed on one anime your members like a “Bleach Beach” Party.

12. Have a manga swap. The club can bring in their own manga and you all sit around a table and watch an anime. When a certain word is said (like the main characters name) pass the books to the left or right. When the anime is over the members get what book they are holding at the time.
