Hudson Valley Community College “Instant Admissions”

An admissions representative from Hudson Valley Community College will be in the guidance office on Friday, October 28th from 8:30 am until 1 pm for instant admissions. Students are accepted to HVCC on the spot. Please stop in the guidance department for an application and to schedule an appointment. There is no application fee.

PSAT/NMSQT – Attention Junior Parents:

This is a two and one/half hour version of the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test). Taking the PSAT exam will aid students in preparing for the SAT, which is taken later in the junior year. The juniors’ scores from the PSAT determine the National Merit Scholars. Each student will receive an information booklet and is encouraged to complete the practice PSAT test included in the booklet. Please ask your student to share this with you.

Financial Aid Night

This evening will be presented by Peter V. Laurenzo, a Certified Financial Planner. It is strongly recommended that parents of seniors and juniors attend but all are welcome. Among the topics discussed will be filing for financial aid, federal, state and institutional aid programs, deadlines, single-remarried parents and evaluating financial aid packages.

Naviance & the College Application Process:

College applications—Seniors should be well along in their college research. We use Naviance, a college and career readiness software that provides students with college planning and career assessment tools. The guidance department met with seniors to review the program and to provide guidance with the college application process. Seniors accessed their Naviance account and started the Common Application. All transcripts, letters of recommendation and school reports will be sent to colleges electronically with the Naviance program. In Naviance, students can access information provided by colleges to which they are applying or considering, including application information, deadlines,Early Action, Early Decision and information pertaining to the submission of test scores (SAT and ACT). Students will monitor the status of their college application in the Family Connection section. Please ask your student to log onto their Naviance account and review the Family Connection section with them. Students can also review scholarship opportunities on Naviance.

Juniors and seniors have an opportunity to meet with college representatives in the Guidance Office. Students should sign into their Naviance account to review the list of college representatives visiting Catholic Central High School and to sign up. The college list is also listed on our website. Parents are always welcome.

If you have any questions regarding Naviance, please feel free to give us a call at 235-7100 x 203.

College application deadlines explained…..

Regular Admissions / There is a set deadline, which is usually midwinter. Students will receive an admissions decision usually in late March, early April. Students make their decision and notify colleges by May 1st.
Rolling Admissions / There is no set deadline with Rolling Admissions. Students apply and usually hear back from the college with an admission decision within two to six weeks from the time the application was submitted. Be aware: Even though there isn’t a set deadline, students applying for popular majors should not wait to apply. Popular and more demanding majors tend to fill-up very quickly!
Early Action (EA) / This is a non-binding plan that requires you to submit your application early, which is usually by November 1st or 15th. The college lets you know of their admissions decision by December or January and students make their decisions and notify colleges by May 1st.
Early Decision (ED) / This is considered binding, so it is very important for students to be absolutely certain that they would enroll in this college. Similarly to Early Action, students will apply early (Nov. 1st or 15th). By December or January the college will notify the student whether they have been admitted. If the student has been accepted under Early Decision, the student has made a commitment to the college. The student is expected to accept immediately instead of waiting until May 1st. The student is also expected to withdraw all other applications to other colleges. Students can only apply to one college using Early Decision. Students can be released from an early decision obligation if the financial aid package is genuinely inadequate.
