Glencoe Curriculum Portfolio Activities—Unit 3
Math 2
Explain why different items are measured in different units of measurement.
You have been assigned to measure a variety of items using the metric system. The items include the following:
1) The length and height of a table
2) The distance between New York City and Washington, D.C.
3) The length and width of a toothbrush
4) The diameter of a CD-ROM
5) The height of a two-story building
6) The height and width of a computer monitor
7) The height, length, and width of your math classroom at school
8) The thickness of a dime
Write a paragraph or two explaining how you would measure each of these items. Include an explanation of the unit you would use for the measurement, mm, cm, m, or km. In your paragraphs explain why the unit measurement you selected works best for each item. If you need more information about the metric system, refer to Glencoe Mathematics: Applications and Connections, Course 1.
Key the paragraphs into a word processor. Spell-check and proofread your paragraphs.
