Addressing the “M” in STEM (grades 3-5): Following the Summer Kickoff workshop, this offering will focus on regional intensive support to those districts implementing the Math Common Core Modules. BOCES will host monthly or every-other-month training beginning in September of the 2013-2014 school year. This monthly training will be provided by BOCES staff in a “just in time” professional development model similar to the regional STEM program training model currently used for science. In this model, the districts will commit to having all of their grades 3, 4, and 5 teachers join a cohort group of teachers by grade level. The teachers will attend all training as part of a regional professional learning community and learn to deliver each NYS math module as available at their grade level. The monthly trainings would include:
· A cohort model of monthly, full-day, grade level trainings led by STEM Mentors (one day per month per grade level)
· Experience with the modules in both teacher and student mode
· Practice using best practices for shifting instructional strategies to meet the rigor of the Common Core, including teaching around the 5Es of Inquiry (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate)
· Integration of instructional concepts/strategies such as Formative Assessment, Cooperative Learning, and developing collaborative learning communities
· Math Notebooks similar to the STEM science notebooks
· Reflection on best instructional practices and trouble-shooting opportunities with a community of teachers implementing the curriculum
· Opportunities for job-embedded coaching support to the participating districts

In this model, the district teachers will participate in training specific to the NYS Common Core Math Modules at their grade level. This training is less intensive than the grades 3-5 math training and intended to provide teachers with an overview of the modules.

Curriculum and
Instructional Strategies
Offerings
Using the Close Reading Strategy to Deepen Comprehension of Complex Text: This one-day workshop will focus on the ELA Common Core Standard, Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity. This shift focuses on developing students’ ability to read grade appropriate text by providing more time and support in the curriculum for close reading. Close reading requires students to engage with a text of sufficient complexity and examine the meaning of the text that will lead to deep comprehension. Participants will experience close reading as a student and reflect on the skills needed to be successful. Teachers will be provided strategies such as (chunking, multiple readings of the same text, craft techniques and related question development) to implement close reading within their specific content area. In addition, various on-line resources that provide teachers access to content specific text will be provided.
