An Annual “Rite Of Spring” In Montpelier, VT
Montpelier, VT -- The National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest began 38 years ago as a promotion created by a Montpelier, Vermont sporting goods owner who wanted to advertise a new line of athletic shoes. At the Montpelier Department of Recreation, he discovered a photogenic pair of superbly rotten sneakers that looked terrific in his “before/after” ad. The Recreation Director seized the moment and created a new contest -- the search for the best of the worst rotten sneakers -- as an annual rite of spring.
In 1988, the maker of Odor-Eaters® products caught a “whiff” of this grand event, and became the official sponsor. The National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest® is always held around the first day of spring. In addition to the $2,500 prize, the winner will receive a trip to New York City to see the Broadway show “Wicked”, the Golden Sneaker award and a year’s supply of much-needed Odor-Eaters products. Finally, the “winning” shoes will be enshrined in the Odor-Eaters Hall of Fumes.
