quiero que vengas conmigo– I want that you come with me
Skeleton story: Someone famous calls someone in the class and wants that they go somewhere with them. Student doesn’t want to go. Famous person cries. Someone from class calls and wants the student to go somewhere with them. Of course they want to go with them. They go and when they get there they see the famous person and they ignore him/her and so the famous person cries again because they wanted the person to go with them and s/he didn’t want to go with him/her.
Tip: Can be done on the phone with no actors, just use phones
1.2quería que bailara – I/s/he/Ud. wanted that someone else dance
quiero que bailes – I want that you dance
Skeleton story: Someone wants their friend to go be on the “So you think you can dance” show with them. They don’t want to go but eventually they end up going. The friend ends up dancing better than the person who wanted to go originally and ends up winning. They get a phone call and somebody wants them to be a professional dancer on “Dancing with the Stars”.
1.3quería que fuera

Skeleton story: Someone wants their pet to go with them somewhere. They won’t let them in because no pets are allowed. The person wants that their pet be something/body else. Go somewhere else, want them to dance but they dance badly because they’re an animal. Wants that it be something/body else. Finally kisses it and it becomes something/body else.
Tip:Use Blaine Ray’s Look, I’m Really Talking (Spanish 3 book) #1.3, mini-story, extended reading, storystrip
(maybe move until later for next year OR combine with Como SiPS and introduce later)
When introducing the subjunctive phrases after the first couple, we did no gestures or PQA. Then in the PMS that follows the subjunctive phrases, the subjunctive phrases were used as much as possible in conjunction with the new vocabulary/structures.
1.4 deseaba comprar – I/s/he/Ud. was desiring/wishing to buy
se le ocurrió vender – it occured to him/her/Ud. to sell
se le acabó el – time ran out on him/her/Ud. (S/he ran out of time)
tiempo
Skeleton story: Somebody wants to buy something, but they don’t have enough money. So it occurs to him/her to sell something but nobody wants to buy it or s/he doesn’t get enough money. Finally it occurs to him/her to sell something else and they get enough money and then the store is out of whatever they wanted to buy FOREVER.
Tips: Se me ocurre vender…..it occurs to everyone in class to sell something. Put it on their desk. Class oohs and ahs. Decides how much they will pay for it. Can get lots of reps comparing and reviewing what occured to certain people to sell. Ask the class questions about who it occurred to to sell what, etc.
Play “Go Fish” (LCD – key phrases for game). Each student has 5 cards. They say “I want that you give me the 5s”. If they have them give them, if they don’t they say “se me acabaron los 5”. Etc.
1.5 quería que le diera – I/s/he/Ud. wanted that someone else give him/her/Ud.
quiero que me des – I want that you give me
Skeleton story: Girl wishes to buy something, doesn’t have enough money. So it occurs to her to go to a bank to rob it and wants that they give her $X so that she can buy it. They can’t give it to her because they ran out of money. She goes somewhere else to rob it, tells the guy that she wants him to give her the money. He faints. When he wakes up he falls in love with the girl and wants that she give him a kiss. He does and
they both fall in love.
1.6Debía manejar con prisa – I/s/he/Ud. should drive in a hurry
chocó con – s/he/Ud. crashed into (something)
le dio una multa – s/he/Ud. gave him/her/Ud. a fine
Skeleton story #1: Somebody wants to go somewhere (Disneyland). Wants that somebody else go with them. It occurs to him/her to go on a rabbit. So they get on the rabbit. The person doesn’t know how to ‘drive’ the rabbit very well. But they drive fast – however s/he shouldn’t because they don’t know how to very well. The rabbit crashes into another rabbit/tree. The people fall off the rabbit. A police officer comes in a hurry (should drive in a hurry because it’s an emergency). Gives the driver a ticket. The driver doesn’t want that the police officer give him/her a ticket. It’s a really expensive ticket. The other person decides that they should drive instead of the other person.
Skeleton story #2: His wife is preggo & about to give birth in the car. She is uncomfortable and asks to lie down in the trunk. So he puts her in the trunk and she tells him that he should drive fast. He knows that he should drive fast but he remembers that he wants to become a cop & he’s afraid to get a ticket. But he remembers that his wife is pregnant and she keeps yelling at him from the back “you should drive faster!” Suddenly he sees lights behind him and pulls over. The cop tells him that he shouldn’t drive that fast. He tells him that he knows but his pregnant wife is in the trunk and they need to get to the hospital. The cop doesn’t believe him but finally goes to the back and opens the trunk. The woman screams and the baby pops out into the arms of the cop. The cop remembers that the man was speeding and should get a ticket but decides since he was telling the truth to not give him a ticket. The man is very relieved because now he can become a cop and now he has become a father for the first time. (thanks to Joe Neilson for general storyline)
Tips: Extended reading & storystrip in LICTM chapter 5, lesson 11 (also look at Story 4 in chapt. 5 LICTM)
1.7quería que tuviera – I/s/he/Ud. wanted that somebody else have
quiero que tengas – I want that you have
Skeleton story #1: A wizard or witch wants that everyone ‘have’ something. Use tener idioms. I want that you be cold! I want that you be afraid! Then a good witch comes behind them and wants that they NOT have those things.
Skeleton story #2: A very generous person gives everything that they have to other people “I want that you have my car”. At the end somebody asks her for something (I want that you give me) and she can’t give it to them because she doesn’t have anything anymore because she gave it all away.
1.8dejó de fumar – s/he/Ud. stopped smoking
después de conseguir – after getting
le echó – s/he/Ud. threw at him/her/Ud.
Starts to smoke and then decides to quit. He throws it on the ground and it explodes. He finally quit smoking.
Skeleton story #2: Trying to quit smoking. Every time he smokes his friend throws something in his face. He goes tot the store again and again to by them and after getting them he smokes the whole pack every time. Finally one day they go somewhere, run out of gas on the way.
They run to the gas station, put gas into a container (I used envase). But oh no! While putting gas in the container he smokes and then he throws his cigarette on the ground and boom – he finally stopped smoking. (ha! in one story because he didn’t have lips anymore! ;)
Tips: **Lectura extendida 1.8 (I did the 2nd story, then used Jeff’s (perezoso) as the extended reading)
1.9insistía (en) que hiciera – I/s/he/Ud. insisted that somebody else do/make
insisto (en) que hagas – I insist that you do/make
los quehaceres – chores
Skeleton story #1: A mom insists that her son/daughter do all kinds of things in the house, but s/he doesn’t want to do any of them.
Skeleton story #2: A parent always was insisting that his/her child do their homework. S/he never wanted to do it even though his/her parent always insisted that s/he do it. One day the child goes over to a monkey’s house and insists that the monkey do his/her homework. So the monkey does the homework but writes the answers in monkey. The child turns in the homework to his/her teacher. The teacher says that the child didn’t do it because s/he doesn’t speak monkey and gives him/her an F. The child jumps up and down and makes monkey noises so the teacher decides to give him/her an A+ because s/he really speaks monkey. The next day the teacher gives a pop quiz in monkey and the student can’t answer anything. The teacher realized that the child did not really speak monkey and gives him/her an F on his/her homework and calls his/her parents. The parents insist that s/he do the homework over again and the child always does his/her homework by him/herself.
Tips: *go back and forth between “insistir en que” and “querer que” so that they get that they both work the same way. Have students insist that other students in the class do crazy things. “I insist that you jump like a kangaroo”. “I insist that you sing like a famous rock star”. “I insist that you put on extravagant make-up” etc.
1.9hacerse – to become (need to change in all materials from llegó a ser)
valía la pena – it was worth it
aprendió (a) – learned (to)
asisitó a – to attend
Skeleton story #1: A dog wanted to become a cat because he was bored with doing his dog chores. He was bored with running after cats, eating food, sleeping on the floor, making holes in the yard – all of the important dog chores. So he went to the vet to get an animal-change operation. Finally he became a cat. But he wasn’t happy as a cat. He did all of the cat chores. He chased mice, ate food slept a lot. But he began to get bored with all of the cat chores. He didn’t really like being a cat. So he decided that he wanted to be a dog again. He went back to the vet and told him that he got bored being a cat and wished to become a dog again. The vet explained to him that it was impossible. Once he became a cat he could never change back. He was very sorry. The poor cat was so sad that he went back to his house and slept for a week.
Tips: *could become many different animals and become bored with each of their ‘chores’.
*dejó de ser whatever job that bored him/her
*después de conseguir after getting the job...
*can use LICTM 6.9
