JOB PURPOSE / The Faculty of Business Law and Social Sciences at Birmingham City University has made a substantial investment in its research and enterprise activity and this appointment is an exciting full-time academic post to support the achievement of its’ ambitious strategy.
The post holder will provide a significant leadership contribution to research, enterprise, learning and teaching and administration within the school, faculty and University. He/she will contribute significantly to the strategic development of the research portfolio and the quality and impact of research in the School and Faculty.
The post holder will lead and develop research and enterprise activity for a subject area which will directly benefit the faculty and school enterprise strategy and contribute to income generation, the research excellence framework and inform the teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
To recruit and supervise PhD/doctoral students.
SCOPE / Lead, direct and work with others to develop internationally renowned research in Skills and Simulation.
Develop leading research expertise and specialist knowledge in the field of expertise.
Develop and maintain an outstanding and world class reputation for research in their field of expertise.
Develop and maintain an international research profile and to strive to publish in high impact peer reviewed journals.
Explore and develop new and ground-breaking research in their area of expertise
Make a significant and leading contribution to maximise the School’s REF submissions for 2020.
Contribute to the development of undergraduate and postgraduate level provision.
PRINCIPAL
ACCOUNTABILITY / To be principally accountable to the Head of School and Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise
Work with the senior managers and research staff in leading, planning and managing the research strategy.
Act as a mentor and guide for early career researchers, post-doctoral and doctoral students.
Contribute positively to health and safety requirements, equality and diversity and other appropriate policies.
PLANNING AND
ORGANISATION / Initiate and lead on the development of scholarly symposia, exhibitions, and publications and dissemination of research outputs.
Prepare research bids and provide appropriate reports and dissemination strategies.
Possess excellent communication and project management skills.
DECISION MAKING / Contribute to decision making in the Faculty/School research activity.
Participate pro-actively in BCU/Faculty/School and appropriate external research and research governance committees, and other groups as appropriate.
Be responsible for the leadership of their own portfolio of research projects.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS / To work with a range of Faculty/School/external staff to establish and develop a national and internationally recognised research portfolio.
Develop and secure key links and multi-professional and multi-agency research and academic networks that enhance the reputation of BCU.
Develop a successful track-record of attracting and sustaining funding through bids/grants with external agencies, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Disseminate and publish the outcomes of the research at nationally and internationally significant conferences and publications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND
EXPERIENCE / Essential
The post holder is expected to be research active and have an outstanding track record in research of national/international standing in their area of expertise
Have an established and current track-record of leadership in research and research governance.
Have clear knowledge and understanding of current external funding opportunities, and experience of preparation for REF and other external mechanisms of assessment and external scrutiny.
An earned research degree, PhD preferred.
Experience of PhD supervision to completion.
Desirable
Evidence of academic leadership in research and enterprise activity
Experience of teaching at undergraduate & postgraduate level.
