Exploring Australia’s Geography- Web Quest

You are about to embark on an exploration in the Land Down Under. Bonzer!!

Now, imagine that you are a television producer traveling to Australia to plan a documentary about the geography of the continent. Because Australia is a whole continent, it varies greatly in terrain. On your journey you will explore everything from the Australian Outback to the Australian Alps. Get ready for an adventure!!!

Using the web links that I will include in addition to some that you will find on your own, you will explore Australia’s geography. As you visit Australia’s features and attractions you will be keeping a journal. Your journal will be a record of the places you visit and the things you learn.

In your journal you will:

· Label a map of Australia with symbols of the places you visit throughout your journey

· Write at least 2 paragraphs about each feature/attraction you visit

FORMAT OF YOUR JOURNAL

You should type each of your journal entries using Google Docs. You will need to create a new document for this project and come up with a catchy name for the journal. Be sure to share the document with me at the beginning so that I will be able to access and grade it. Each journal entry should have at least one picture of the landmark you visited. You will need to create a cover page for your journal with an appropriate title and graphic. Your journal will be arranged in the following order:

· Cover page

· Journal entries

· Bibliography- you will be using Easybib which you should already have an account for

· Map (this is the only paper that you will be turning in- the rest is done on Google Docs)

JOURNAL ENTRIES

You will type a journal entry for each feature you visit on your trip. In the entry, discuss where the feature is located, what kind of structure it is, how it was formed or built, and any other interesting facts that you learned. Be sure to include people’s names and important dates that are associated with the landmarks you select. You will also need to have at least one picture of the landmark you are writing about.

DO NOT FORGET TO LABEL THE MAP WITH SYMBOLS OF THE PLACES YOU HAVE VISITED!!

LET’S BEGIN!

1. Start at the first website listed to get an overview of places in Australia. Look over the physical and political maps to get a general understanding of where places are located in Australia. Read through the facts to learn some basic information about the continent.

2. Using the outline map that I have given you, add the name and location of the 6 states and 2 territories. As you continue on your adventure, be sure to mark each place you visit on your map by drawing a representative picture and labeling the place appropriately.

3. Decide on the 4 places you want to research more and include in your project.

4. Label each of the features you chose in step 3 on your map.

5. Using the information on the landforms and other websites that you have visited as well as the resources from the LMC website and explore the landforms so that you can write a two paragraph journal entry about each. See the directions on “format of journal” for the journal entry guidelines.
