Every clause has a subject and a predicate; sentence pattern 1 has two clauses separated by a semicolon.

The first main clause contains both a subject and a predicate; the second main clause has a subject and predicate, too.

The biggest mistake students make with sentence pattern 1 is to put a complete sentence on one side of the semi colon; putting only a fragment on this side.

Sentence pattern 1a uses a conjunctive adverb; however, you must remember to still use a complete independent clause on each side of the semicolon.

Being able to find verbs is important in identifying clauses; therefore, you should look for the verbs first and then find the subjects.

Sentence pattern 1b is another variation on the pattern; the semicolon still separates the two parts of the sentence, and in this case, one half of the sentence contains two clauses.
