ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

(Revised: 03/18/2014)

Synopsis:

In order to continue to provide university employees with a safe and healthy work environment, it is the policy of Cal Poly Pomona to require attendance by faculty and staff at certain campus environmental health and safety training sessions. Employees are required to attend the various sessions based on job classification, duties, and applicable state and federal health and safety laws. Additional information on required training can be found in the Environmental Health & Safety Regulatory Training Requirements Manual available at http://www.cpp.edu/~ehs/files/occupational/doc/Regtraining.doc or on the EH&S (Environmental Health & Safety) Training Web Page available at http://www.cpp.edu/~ehs/training.shtml.

Availability of Skillsoft Web Based Training Courses and Signing in.

The Skillsoft Web Based Training System is available for all employees, except Auxiliary employees, using their Bronco Name and Password. The Skillsoft Web Based Training System will record completion of each course automatically. This data is available to Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs in a Microsoft Excel file at http://www.cpp.edu/~ehs/files/occupational/xls/TrainingDatabase.xls, which is updated on a monthly basis.

Skillsoft encompasses the concepts of performance-oriented instruction, mastery and the sequencing of instructional activities and strategies. The models incorporated into Skillsoft draws heavily from adult learning principles that emphasize learner initiative, self-management and experiential learning.

SkillSoft has a depth of expertise in environmental safety, health and transportation regulatory compliance that ensures effective training and readiness. Also Skillsoft provides:

· Clear understanding of courses in a linear fashion.

· Readable texts, audio content and visual clues are consistent within the text.

· Real-life applications and explanations are used.

Required Web-Based Training:

Employees are assigned to Job Safety Classifications based on their job duties and the hazards in their work area. For example: Employees who work in an office environment are assigned to the “Office Worker” classification; while employees working in Chemical Laboratories are assigned to the “Laboratory Worker” Classification. When you log onto Skillsoft you can click on MY PLAN in the upper left corner of the screen. The MY PLAN Window will typically list the courses assigned to you based on your Job Safety Class. It is recommended that you complete the listed courses assigned to you. If you want to take some of the other courses, you can click CATALOG on the left side of the screen and click on “CSU Environmental, Health, and Safety” to access to rest of the courses.

Skillsoft Workstation Troubleshooting

This section lists some known problems that you may experience while trying to run the Skillsoft Web Based Training System along with possible solutions.

· Authentication Failed. After entering your Bronco Username and Password you receive the message “Authentication Failed” (see image below). The Bronco Username and/or Password you entered are incorrect or invalid. Verify that you have entered a valid Bronco Username and Password. These should be the same Username and Password you use to log on to a campus computer or to retrieve campus emails.

· Your user ID has been deactivated. After entering your Bronco Username and Password you receive the message “Error: Your user ID has been deactivated. Contact your training administrator“ (see image below). Your Username in the Skillsoft Web Based Training System is currently inactive. This typical occurs if your employment appointment is quarterly and the new quarter appointment has not been submitted or processed. · Application has encountered an error. After entering your Bronco Username and Password you receive the message “The application has encountered an error. Contact your training manager.” (see image below). This occurs when you are not listed as a User in the Skillsoft Web Based Training Database. The reasons you are not listed can be: 1) That your employment appointment has not been submitted to Payroll Services or has not yet been processed in the Peoplesoft System; or 2) That you are not a University Employee or you are an Auxiliary employee. If the processing of your employment appointment is the reason, you will be added to the Skillsoft Web Based Training System by 2 am the next working day following the posting of your employment appointment. If the reason is that you are not a University Employee or you are an Auxiliary employee you may be able to utilize the Clarity Web Based Training-System.). For additional questions or further clarification you may contact Environmental Health & Safety at or at (909) 869-4697.

· Course does not load. Users may get to their CATALOG or MY PLAN section of their profile and click the course to launch it and “nothing will happen”. The majority of the time this is due to a pop-up blocker being enabled on their browser. Here are the steps to take to have their pop-up blocker disabled for the site:

o Usually if nothing happens on the first time you click the launch button a prompt will appear at the top or bottom of the screen (depending on which version of Internet Explorer is being used). Users can allow the pop-ups for this site and the browser will remember not to block pop-ups from Skillport

o If you do not get a prompt, you will need to manually go into your pop-up blocker setting:

Courses not displaying content. If a course is able to launch in another window, but ends up not loading the content (Loading keeps spinning, navigation tools don’t load, etc.) this is usually related to a Java Issue. The best option is to click the indicated link (“click here”) near the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. If this does not resolve the problem follow the procedures below.

Though Skillport is starting to move away from Java components in their training, they still recommend that all users are running the latest version of Java on their computer until the components have been fully removed. Skillport has a 3 step process on how to identify the issues related to Java and courses not loading content. Please click this link: http://support.skillsoft.com/customer/SPJava.htm or follow the instructions below:

1) Run a Browser Test: http://browser.skillport.com/bh/default.asp. You will need to input your e-mail address to run the test which will serve as reference if you need to contact SkillSoft support later to help troubleshoot any issues you may have with your browser.

2) Make sure your browser is optimized for Skillsoft Content. This will give you some helpful steps to make sure Java and your browser is running the optimal settings for running SkillSoft course content. If the directions seem complicated, do not hesitate to contact the Computer Support Group for your Department to assist you in these steps. You are also more than welcome to contact SkillSoft support through their live help feature: http://support.skillsoft.com/livehelp/

3) Contact a SkillSoft support team member to assist you in troubleshooting the issue. Not all problems are created equal and some issues require more attention than others. SkillSoft has support available around the clock to resolve these issues. Please run the Browser Test prior to contacting SkillSoft support. Providing your e-mail address to the support team after the browser test will help them assist you quickly and identify the problem.

Should I allow Java to run when it prompts me?

Currently, the majority of the Skillsoft courses are running Java components within their courses. When launching a course for the first time; it may ask to run a Page Player or CCA Player. When prompted, please click “Run”. This will allow the course to run the necessary components to launch the course properly.

If you are running Java from Firefox and Google Chrome the prompts will look similar to the screen shots below. Please allow to “allow and remember” or “always run for this site”.
