Spatial Awareness/Effort/Relationship Awareness
· Tag with Rip-Flags: begin with small groups (4 on 4) in grids where one team attempts to steal as many of the opposite teams' flags as possible within a specified time limit - emphasis on quick changes of direction, level; twisting, bending, turning; feinting with head/shoulders (work on this individually & with a partner prior to small group play)
· Team-Tag: Progress to playing tag with different colored flags and each team attempts to gather another team's flags; flags that are successfully taken are put into a team hula-hoop positioned on the sideline / · Capture the flag

WEEK
6-7 / Educational Games: Dribbling With Feet; Passing; Kicking
· Dribbling around obstacles that are positioned in specific patterns or formations (5 cones like 5-on-a-die; zig-zag); emphasis on speed, control, changes of direction, using inside and outside of feet to maneuver the ball; and stopping ball quickly and precisely
· Dribbling with feet around stationary opponents; quick changes of direction & speed; manipulating ball with inside and outside parts of the feet (NO GOALS)
· Same as above; opponents allowed to deny space “add pressure” (NO GOALS)
· Dribbling forward and passing diagonally to a partner (lead-pass) – varying distances away – no defense
· Dribbling forward through general space and passing among 3 team players attempting to keep WIDTH, DEPTH & SUPPORT or a triangular formation
· For more skillful players add one defense player who can first deny space, then attempt to take the ball away
· Stationary kick using the shoelaces or instep of foot toward a zone or goal area
· Dribbling forward through general space, stopping ball, pushing it 1-2 ft. forward (2-touch) and then approaching ball to perform an instep kick - no defense
· Dribbling in general space; then pushing ball forward 1-2 ft. (1-touch) (shoelace or instep kick) toward a zone or goal area - no defense
· Passing + Kicking: Same as above adding passing to a partner a medium distance away and then kicking with shoelaces or "instep" toward a zone or goal - no defense
· 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 keep-away (one group wears pinnies); played in a 10 x 10 yd or larger grid area; (NO GOAL; THEN WITH A GOAL, BUT NO GOALIE) / ACTIVITIES USED:

13-15 / Educational Games: Striking With a Long Handled Implement - Hockey
· Using a hockey stick dribble/move a yarn ball (if inside) or a whiffle type ball (outside in grass) around obstacles and other players
· Add stationary defense
· Practice dribbling ball and evading an opponent; learning to turn, dodge, move on angles to defensive opponent
· 3 vs 2 in a grid area - emphasis on learning how to intercept/steal a ball and convert from defense to offense
· Add passing to team mates in groups of 3 within a small grid area - no defense, then with 1/2 defenders - no goal

· Dribbling a ball with dominant/nondominant hand - changing speeds, pathways, directions, levels and turning or "spinning out" when approaching a stationary obstacle (e.g., cone)
· Dribbling and evading an opponent/partner (only denies space, doesn't move) - learning to cut to the diagonal and keep one's body between the ball and the opponent
· Above vs a stationary defense - "Trees in the Forest"
· Bounce pass - with a stationary partner, then on the move
· Dribble & bounce pass - within a team of 3 players within a general space, but not moving forward; then learning to move across or through general space keeping appropriate spacing among players; add chest pass
· Explore shooting: from varying distances - no form/technique emphasized during exploration phase
· Stationary 2-handed or 1-handed set shot - with technique introduced: stationary, then after dribbling forward through space; varying distance from basket
· Small sided games with shooting
· Defensive movement-begin teaching defensive body positioning in 3rd grade and progress to a moving defense with defensive concepts (e.g., keeping body between ball, basket and another teammate) / ACTIVITIES USED:

· Rolling + Direction - review forward roll; add a movement skill prior to forward roll and learning to recover from a forward roll without using hands to push off of mat & recovering from rolls with feet together
· Backward roll - Begin with backward rocker, learning to position hands by ears; use an incline mat if possible
· Rolling with Wide Body Shape: straddle forward roll
· Rolling after performing jumps or balances
· Balances - continue exploration of balances at different levels on different body parts with different body shapes
· Inverted balances - dynamic or static with progressions for beginning to learn to balance on hands only; also head & hands or shoulders; balances can be performed by self or with support (against a sturdy foam shape or when being spotted by a partner or the teacher)
· Weight Transfer - Tuck/Straddle/or Flank Vault: transfer weight ONTO low-to-medium-level equipment or apparatus by placing the hands on equipment and springing off from two feet (land on feet); thus jumping ONTO a foam shape; (beginning 1/2 of a vault)
· Weight Transfer - Over Low to Medium Level Vault, Foam Shape, Bench or Vertical Tire
· 1 to 2 Foot Take - Off: Learning to use a running approach and take-off from 1 to 2 feet prior jumping up onto a bench, vault or beam and then as a take-off for vaulting over a vault, foam shape, bench or vertical tire
· Weight Transfer - from feet-to-hands-to-feet as in a cartwheel; more skillful students can begin to learn to do a one-handed cartwheel or lunge + cartwheel + lunge or lunge + cartwheel + jump
· Weight Transfer - beginning limbers: forwards (requires ability to do a handstand first) and backwards (use foam shapes to support lower back/hips) / ACTIVITIES USED:

· Review of different types of jumping on floor, off of apparatus, over obstacles (1 to 2 ft. or 2 to 2 ft.); jumping for horizontal distance, jumping for height (vertical distance)
· Hanging Ropes: climbing, hanging/swinging, skin-the-cat, climbing wall
· Counterbalances with a partner: using different body parts and different levels (facing partner; one partner with back to other partner)
· Partner balances: various balances with one partner as base-of-support / ACTIVITIES USED:

· Underhand striking pattern (w/one or two hands) / Overhead striking pattern/Forearm Pass or Bump (with 2 arms only) continuously in self-space, toward a "wall-partner"
· Same as above after a toss received from a partner (light direct, toss) - return hit to a partner over a line or low net (lightweight ball; junior volleyball) using underhand/overhead/forearm striking pattern; then from a toss to right, left, deep (beyond receiver), short (in front of receiver)
· Underhand Serve: over a low net
· Moving to Receive & Return Hit: after one-two bounces perform a catch, then underhand/overhand/forearm striking pattern
· 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 games "Passball": modified game allowing bouncing and catching and as many hits per side as number of players; no more than 2 bounces prior to return or a catch
· Play partner games over a medium height net and be able to volley the ball back and forth with control / ACTIVITIES USED:

28-29 / Educational Games: Striking With Short Handled Implement - "Lollipop Paddles"
• Low to high striking pattern on both sides of body hitting a large shuttle, balloon, or foam tennis ball (4-5" diameter): continuously up in air within one's own personal space [after a self-toss]; greater emphasis on critical cues
• Low to high striking pattern (forehand/backhand) -
toward a wall target using a foam tennis ball, attempting to hit 3-5 continuous forehands with ball bouncing on floor between hits; more skillful students can also use a backhand striking pattern
• Low to high striking pattern with a shuttle or balloon - to a partner over a rope on floor or suspended from cones or chairs, or a low net after a self toss / ACTIVITIES USED:

· Batting Progressions: Batting a stationary ball, then a self-tossed ball; then a pitched ball from a short distance & medium trajectory; then a pitched ball from a medium distance and medium trajectory
· Playing small-sided games which permits all students to be actively engaged (touch the ball during each bout of play) / · Freeze base
