Economics Periodic Review 2013-14

Panel discussions led to the following conclusions in respect of the range of programmes reviewed.

Conclusions on Innovation and Good Practice:

The Panel commended the following:

·  The Economics Society as an example of programme value added

·  The accessibility of staff

·  The availability of mathematics support

·  The usefulness of the placement practice module

·  The cohesive team

Conclusions on Quality and Standards:

The Panel confirmed that quality and standards was appropriate but noted the following:

·  It should be ensured that programme specifications are current and reflect the programme structure.

·  To achieve clarity of approach to scholarly activity to support teaching throughout the programme and to be able to articulate research informed teaching

Conclusions on whether the programmes remain current and valid in light of developing knowledge in the discipline, practice in its application and developments in teaching and learning:

The Panel was assured that the programmes remain current and valid and suggested that:

·  The Year 2 Macroeconomics module ECN204 looks dated with its emphasis on IS-LM & AS-AD, but it was understood that the Group are aware of this and already has the module under review

·  More fluidity in programme content be created across all three years of the programmes

Forward looking recommendations for actions to remedy any identified shortcomings, and for further enhancement of quality and standards:

The Team was asked to consider the following:

·  To reflect on the group strategy for engaging with the CEP[1] from a strategic and operational standpoint without losing the integrity of the programmes

·  To review the marketing of the programmes to ensure the unique and distinctive features are portrayed

·  To develop a strategic plan to develop Moodle once the programmes have started in September

·  To develop a student communication strategy not wholly reliant on email

·  To work with the Faculty Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) on refining the personal tutoring system

·  To take ownership of the shape of the programme portfolio, this should include any programmes to be discontinued and any new developments e.g. with psychology

·  To clarify aspirations for partnerships

·  To ensure that the Group are aware of the budget available to them as a discipline area and how this is accessed

·  To clarify how issues raised by the Group are brought to the School Executive and other fora and how feedback is given to the Group.
