Indian Removal
Standard - SS8H5: The student will explain significant factors that affected the development of Georgia as part of the growth of the United States between 1789 and 1840.Element d.: Analyze the events that led to the removal of Creeks and Cherokees; include the roles of Alexander McGillivray, William McIntosh, Sequoyah, John Ross, Dahlonega Gold Rush, Worcester v. Georgia, Andrew Jackson, John Marshall, and the Trail of Tears.
Directions:
1. Complete the Research Table about the immediate and long-term causes of the removal of the Cherokee Indians (the Trail of Tears) and the overall effect on the Cherokee people and the citizens of Georgia. This research should include each of the following events:
1. Dahlonega Gold Rush
2. Indian Removal Act
3. Gold Lottery of 1832
4. Worcester v. Georgia
5. Treaty of New Echota
6. Trail of Tears

3. Once students have completed the Research Table, students are required to complete a Written Response (narrative writing assignment) to tell the story of the removal of the Cherokee Indians. Students will be asked to complete five journal entries, each in the format of a Cherokee Indian’s diary entry. Each one of these narrative writings should be a minimum of one paragraph long, with a minimum of 5-7 sentences. These entries should also include a reference to one of the causes of the Trail of Tears or a description of a day’s events during the trip to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Each of the narrative writings should also include the date when it would have been written. Use your research to determine what would be an appropriate date for each journal entry, based on the events/causes discussed in the entry. You will be graded based on the Revolution, Statehood, and Westward Expansion Project Rubric (focusing on your completion and accuracy of information in the Research Table and discussed in your Written Responses). The Research Table will be graded as 50% of you final project grade with the Written Responses (narrative writings) each accounting for 10% of the final grade (50% total).

Written Responses – Complete five short, narrative writing assignments (journal entries) describing a cause of the Trail of Tears or a description of the trip to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Each of the five narrative writings should be a minimum of 5-7 sentences and should demonstrate an understanding of the effects of each cause/event. Be sure to also include a date for each of the journal entries that would be appropriate considering the events/topics discussed in that particular entry. This sheet can be used for final drafts (written in blue or black ink) or as a rough draft if you plan on typing and printing your final drafts.
