SUBSTITUTE WORKER –Part-Time, NON-benefited, non-exempt position starting at $11.56 per hour. These positions work on an “as needed” basis to cover shifts at our 24 hour facilities. Days / Shifts will vary according to the needs of the program.

SUMMARY OF JOB:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, Substitute Workers provide services to clients who participate in TLCS programs. Services include independent living skills training, crisis intervention, mediation and other related social and mental health services. Being a Substitute Worker gives hands-on experience in social rehabilitation for persistently psychiatrically ill adults including homeless individuals with a psychiatric diagnosis. It can serve as an entry step into a dynamic and innovative program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: (Representative List Only)

Crisis Respite Center (CRC):

· Conduct a brief assessment of each individual to determine appropriate participation of the Crisis Respite Center services.

· Perform brief intake and initial needs assessments of each individual at the Crisis Respite Center.

· Refer to and when appropriate, advocate for, needed community resources for individuals.

· Link and consult with community agencies and persons involved in the client’s life as necessary to obtain needed information.

· Maintain up to date records and charts with accuracy and integrity.

· File documentation and related client paperwork to ensure up-to-date case files.

Residential Programs (Co-ops/Palmer):

· On call support and respond to crises for all TLCS residential properties after business hours and on weekends.

· Observe and assess the resident's/individual’s progress within the program, personal goals, and mental stability. Document their goal process.

· Share and demonstrate household tasks including cooking, shopping, laundry, yard upkeep and cleaning with residents.

· Shop for food and household supplies when needed or requested.

· Support and encourage client medication regime. Provide assistance as needed (residential programs).

· Assist in cleaning, yard maintenance, projects and residential/program activities at residential program sites, as assigned by the Program Manager.

All Programs (CRC and Residential):

· Be available for intermittent substitute work when needed (Overnight / NOC shift is highly desirable).

· Intervene in crisis and emergency situations, working overtime as needed and approved.

· Provide clear and accurate written documentation on special client incidences.

· Observe, assess and refer (within one’s scope of practice) in situations with clients regarding acute mental health symptoms (e.g., suicidality, gravely disabled and homicidality) and/or acute and chronic physical health issues.

· Provide advocacy and assistance to clients having difficulty in accessing other services.

· Complete all necessary forms and paperwork required by the program on a timely basis (e.g., special incident reports, etc.)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

· Must have at least two (2) to four (4) years (FTE) experience in the mental health field providing direct mental health services (Mental Health Assistant II (MHA II)).

· Work experience with persons who have substance abuse problems, preferably individuals who are dually diagnosed (mental health & substance abuse) is highly desirable.

· Knowledge of 12-Step Programs and/or personal experience with substance abuse recovery is highly desirable.

LICENSES:

· Provide own automobile, possess a valid California Driver’s License and current vehicle insurance. Driving record must meet, and continue to meet, the underwriting standards established by the generalized driving guidelines used by our insurance broker.

· Must have at least 3 or more years of driving experience.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

· Knowledge of and experience working with Microsoft Word and Outlook.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

· Ability to communicate and interact with psychiatrically disabled adults and adults who have acute and/or chronic physical health issues in a residential or outreach setting.

· Ability to interview, assess service needs, and make an appropriate emergency plan for hard-to-reach psychiatrically disabled adults.

· Ability to coordinate and advocate for services and resources for homeless, psychiatrically disabled adults.

· Knowledge of, or ability to learn about, community organizations and community resources.

· Ability to assess emergency situations and provide crisis intervention.

· Ability to pass clearance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and/or Department of Justice (DOJ) background screenings.

· Consumer of mental health services or a family member of a mental health consumer desirable.
