Black Catholic History Month - Sr. Thea Bowman

Sr. Thea Bowman
We have members of St. Francis Parish who were raised in Yazoo City, Mississippi, like Lennie Mosely and Edward Byas, and one of Yazoo City’s most prominent citizens was Sr. Thea Bowman. She is not an official saint in the Catholic Church, but you can’t tell that to people who knew this powerful black woman.
Thea was born in 1937, the granddaughter of a slave.
Raised in a Protestant family, she decided at the age of 9 to become a Catholic. Her faith led her to become a religious sister in a Franciscan community based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She first served as a school teacher and received graduate degrees in English and Linguistics. A gifted musician, she began to share her faith and culture throughout the country. She combined singing, preaching, prayer and story-telling in her powerful presentations on faith and the love of God in all people.
Her personality and programs helped to break down racial and cultural barriers. Thea reminded people of their giftedness by God, particularly in her message that “Black is beautiful”. She was known nationally for introducing black culture and song into the Catholic liturgy. Among other awards, she was the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in theology from Boston College.
Sadly, she was diagnosed with cancer and died in 1990 at the age of 53. The name “Thea” means “of God”. And for those who knew her or heard her, she well lived up to her name.

En la parroquia de San Francisco tenemos algunos miembros que crecieron en Yazoo City, Mississippi, como Lennie Mosley and Edward Byas, y uno de los ciudadanos más importantes era Hermana Thea Bowman. No es oficialmente una santa en la Iglesia Católica, pero no puede decirle esto a las personas que conocían a esta señora negra y poderosa.
Creció en una familia protestante, y a la edad de nueve años decidió hacerse católica. Su fe la guió para hacerse una hermana religiosa en una comunidad franciscana establecida en La Crosse, Wisconsin. Servía primero como una maestra en una escuela y recibió sus licenciaturas en inglés y literatura. Tenía mucho talento para la música y así comenzó a compartir su fe y la cultura por el país. Combinaba su cantar con predicar, orar, y contar las historias en sus presentaciones poderosas sobre su fe y el amor de Dios en todas las personas.
Su personalidad y sus programas ayudaban para romper los obstáculos de raíz. Thea le recordaba a la gente de sus regalos de Dios, particularmente en su mensaje de “Moreno es hermoso”. Fue conocida nacionalmente por introducir la cultura morena y cantar en la liturgia católica. Entre otros premios, fue la primera mujer afroamericana en recibir un grado doctoral en teología del Colegio Boston.
Tristemente, fue diagnosticada con cáncer y murió en mil novecientos noventa a la edad de cincuenta y tres años. El nombre “Thea” significa “de Dios”. Y a los que la conocieron o la escucharon, pueden afirmar que ella vivió muy bien según su nombre.
