MUSI 1311 Elementary Harmony
Catalog Description:
This course correlates the elements of music theory through the use of written and
keyboard harmony, sight-singing, dictation, and general ear training. The basic study
includes a working knowledge of notation, rhythm, scales, intervaling tones, triads,
seventh chords, inversions, and non-harmonic tones. Must be taken concurrently with
MUSI 1116.

Introduction and Purpose
This is a 3 lecture hour transfer course which serves as the first component in the harmony sequence for music majors and minors. The course serves as an introduction to music elements including pitch, rhythm, chord types, voice leading, part writing and harmonic progression and musicianship skills including visual analysis, aural recognition and keyboard performance. Concurrent enrollment in MUSI-1116 Elementary Sightsinging and Ear Training is required; concurrent enrollment in MUSI-1181 Piano Class I or MUAP-1169 Piano I is strongly recommended.

Objectives At the completion of this course the student should be able to:
1. recognize and identify pitches and pitch patterns, including intervals and scales; components of musical time, including pulse, meter and rhythm; harmonic constructs, including triads and seventh chords; and diatonic chord progressions.
2. evidence cognitive, written, aural and keyboard proficiency with the pitch and harmonic materials covered in the course of the semester.
3. demonstrate competency in synthesizing these materials through composition and part writing exercises.

Methods of Evaluation
1. Workbook exercises, worksheets and keyboard skills=50% of final grade
2. Midterm examination=20% of final grade
3. Final examination=30% of final grade
4. Final grade percentage breakdown:
A=90-100%
B=80-89%
C=70-79%

D=60-69%
F=0-59%
When computing the final grade, the lowest two daily assignment grades will be dropped. Examinations will consist of written and keyboard components. The Midterm and Final examinations will be comprehensive. Student honesty and attendance policies as stated in the catalog and student handbook are followed.
