6. For each major in a degree program, the institution assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field. In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration. (Comprehensive Standard 3.4.11)

Narrative:
Columbus State University assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field. This practice applies to a curricular area or concentration, as well. Official copies of academic transcripts are required upon hire and are maintained in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs.

Within some departments, coordination of curricular responsibilities is handled by the department chair.[1] However, departments which house more than one major or curricular area (e.g., the Department of Teacher Education, the Department of Management and Marketing, etc.), may identify one or more additional program coordinators so that the individual responsible for the program has the academic qualifications necessary to manage the program and to coordinate curriculum development and review. The program coordinator is responsible for all courses within the program regardless of delivery format (i.e. face-to-face, online, or hybrid) and regardless of the location of delivery (i.e. main campus or an external instructional site).

The responsibilities of the program coordinator include, but are not limited to, the following:

·  Developing or coordinating and monitoring the design, delivery, and assessment of the assigned academic program;

·  Submitting curricular changes (new courses, modified courses, course deactivations, new programs, program changes, etc.) using the appropriate protocol for items that must be reviewed at any level at the university,[2] at the University System,[3] or at applicable accrediting agencies such as the Commission on Colleges;[4]

·  Collaborating with colleagues within the discipline to conduct assessments such as the annual Major Field Assessment[5] and the Comprehensive Program Review[6] in accordance with USG regulations;

·  Maintaining current knowledge of curricular trends in the discipline;

·  Maintaining a current understanding of changes occurring within the department, college, university, and/or the University System of Georgia;

·  Communicating curricular changes to appropriate faculty, staff, advisors, administrators, and students; and

·  Developing course schedules that provide students reasonable opportunities to progress through the program of study in a timely manner.

In addition to the general tasks listed above, the Department of Teacher Education provides an extensive definition of the responsibilities of program coordinators within the Department of Teacher Education Faculty Handbook.[7]

Academically Qualified Program Coordinators

All of CSU's program coordinators are academically qualified for their assigned coordinating roles. All undergraduate program coordinators hold an appropriate earned degree at the master's level or higher. All graduate program coordinators hold an appropriate terminal degree. All program coordinators are academically qualified in other ways as well, including active scholarship and research accomplishments in areas related to the programs being coordinated and the accumulation of relevant academic and professional experience.

In 2005, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia required that teacher candidates in secondary education earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in an academic discipline for each subject to be taught. Candidates were also required to complete all of the courses in the study of teaching and learning and the field experiences required for certification.[8] Additionally, it was required that these programs be housed in the department which also housed the academic discipline.

To address these requirements, the coordination of secondary education programs and the P-12 programs in foreign languages is a shared responsibility of a qualified program coordinator in the content area and a qualified program coordinator in the field of education.

The following tables provide information identifying each academic program, the name of program coordinator, and the specific academic credentials which make the individual qualified to serve in this role. The full vita of each coordinator can be accessed by clicking on his/her name.
