COLLAGE 1 – UPPER KEY STAGE 2

SKILL / SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES / ARTISTS
WORKS OF ART / VOCABULARY / CURRICULUM LINKS / RECOMMENDED MATERIALS
To refine and enrich collage work by incorporating paint, drawing, print and paste. / Activity 1:
Sketchbook: Collect patterns and textures from different sources, eg magazines and build on them: isolate lines, group themes/textures. Collect images of food (including photographic/digital) and build up a collage depicting human form(s). Pupils arrange design on paper (size and colour to be a considered choice by the pupil) and paint and draw into/onto the found images to build up picture. Vegetables, leaves, sections of fruit and flowers can be printed onto the design. Leaves and found objects could be pasted on, covered with tissue paper and PVA’d to create opaque/transparency. Dried sections of fruit/foodstuffs could also be incorporated.
- extended idea – use of colour to depict season choice as well as vegetables and fruit available in that season.
- Contemporary angle – portrait based on meat or fish or for eg an Italian theme.
Activity 2:
Show poster of ‘Opened by Customs’ and discuss possible reasons for choices in materials. Explore material, colour, shape, edges (cut, torn, serrated,), blank/marked.
Discuss emotions/feelings, overall effect of collage.
Show class the scraps you have collected on your shopping expedition. Pupils select materials and begin to play around with ideas for their own design. Could ask pupils to think of a theme or idea to base their collage on. Rip, tear, draw and paint, build up layers, overlap pictures and photographs, stamps – anything goes! / Guiseppe Arcimboldo
