Welcome to 7th grade Math!

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 7th grade Math class. It is my pleasure to work with and get to know you this year. Throughout this class students will be covering a range of materials from Ratios and Proportions, to Expressions and Equations, Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Data and Statistics, and more! It is our goal that throughout these concepts students will also become great thinkers, doers and problem solvers!

Course Standards

In Grade 7, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Class Expectations:

Students should come to class prepared to learn and participate in class activities. We will begin each class with a “Do Now” to check the students’ understanding and provide practice from previous lessons. Students will have the opportunity to have questions answered from the previous and current lessons. The daily lesson will follow. Students will participate in a variety of activities including individual and small group work.

Students will need the following materials for class EVERYDAY!

·  Sharpened pencil (It may help to have an individual sharpener students carry with them!)

·  Extra paper

·  Math binder

·  Optional materials include: markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks, dry-erase markers

Homework:

Homework is intended to reinforce what has been learned in class. Practice is an important part of learning mathematics. Homework will be assigned approximately 3 times a week. Homework assignments will be written in the student agenda. Late work will be accepted for a lesser grade. In the case of an absence, the student will have 2 days from the day of their return to make-up their work for full credit.

Tests, Quizzes and Projects:

A test will be given approximately every 2 weeks (after each unit of study). The date of the test will be announced in advance. If we find that we need more time to review the concepts then we will postpone the test. There will be a review session the day before each test.

Quizzes will be given more frequently throughout a unit. The purpose of quizzes is to determine a student’s progress on a concept. Students will have scheduled quizzes which will be written in their agendas. Results of the quiz help me decide whether to proceed with new concepts or re-teach the current concepts.

A project will be assigned each quarter (9 weeks). The project will be graded as a test grade. The topics will correlate with the standards we are covering during the quarter. It will be an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and mastery with a bit of creativity.

Conferences/Communication:

I encourage students and parents with individual concerns to contact me for a conference. Students may make an appointment in the mornings with me. Parents/guardians, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Email is the fastest way to get a response but you can also call the school and leave a message if I am unavailable.

Thank you,
