Civility Statements

Many departments now include a reference to institutional citizenship or civility in job ads as a way to indicate to potential applicants the high value they place on collegial interactions with others (i.e., students, staff, faculty, external stakeholders). We provide two examples of civility statements currently in use in both job ads and position responsibility statements.

1. All faculty members are expected to exhibit and convey good citizenship within the program, the department, college, and university activities and collegial interactions, and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics.

2. All ISU employees have a responsibility to maintain a positive workplace that is free of discrimination and harassment. Prof. _____ is expected to have collegial interactions with all co-workers and model safe and fiscally responsible behavior for students. Prof. ___ is expected to be in compliance with established policies of Iowa State University (including the ISU Code of Computer Ethics and Acceptable Use, biosafety regulations, OSPA, purchasing, etc.), and he/she is expected to participate in the annual performance evaluation process.

3. The Department of ________________ is committed to sustaining a collegial, positive, and productive environment for scholarship, learning, service, and outreach for each individual and for the collective benefit of all. Faculty are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that contributes constructively to the department’s mission and reputation. In addition, faculty are expected to work to maintain a positive workplace that emphasizes respect for the opinions of others and is free from forms of misconduct, as enumerated in Chapter 7 of the ISU Faculty Handbook.
