Today’s trade was extremely impressive once again highlight that those selling direct off the farm are selling their calves very much below their best value and are not maximising their farm returns.
31 Friesians and Dairy type on offer with few classing as best calves, but selling very well. 11 bulls over £100, best £150 for L J Scott & Son, £120 and £130 for R A Pullin, 2nd quality types £70 - £85, 3rd Quality £50-£70 with respect the killing types many if not all going to rear £30-£50. 31 avg £83.50.
Hereford heifers to £225 for R J Prout and £210 for T S Baker. Angus bulls £265for E & V Kidner, £290 for R A Pullin heifers to £180 for P J & S R Bennett.
Continental calves on absolute flyer. Charolais bulls to £365 for P H Baker, Simmental £365 for B Gough, medium Simmentals £260-£265. Limousin bulls £370 for R H Oughton, Blonde bulls to £365 for R B Gallop. A tremendous number of 1st quality blues to a top of £385 for Stroud Green and G M Lambert, £380 for J N Rogers (who brings calves to Cirencester all the way from Hereford), £378 twice for Mark Maslin, £375 for Stroud Green and 33655 for P H Baker. Another half dozen over £300, but best blue heifers £260+ all day reaching £300 for W J Tinney, R H ^& M E Oughton, 14 Blue heifers £248+ with all types of cattle very dear, we could sell twice as many calves to advantage and all those direct selling should at least try markets again.

A strong trade saw Hereford grazing cows to £1000 & £800 from Mr D Murray, Painswick. An Aberdeen Angus cows with her Charolais x steer calf to £1400 and heifer calf to £1180 from Mr P Sidgwick, Winchcombe. A Charolais bull (16mnths) to £1300 from Mr G Lovell, Elmore.

A few more forward sold to a very good trade with the strong cattle in short supply and varying quality on the farming cattle.
The few stronger older cattle (24 – 30mnths) saw a Limousin steer to £1220 (185p/kg) & Aberdeen Angus steers to £1090 (183p/kg) from Mr D Murray, Painswick. Hereford steers sold to £1155 (166p/kg) & £1105 (169p/kg) from Mr S Freeth, Cirencester. Big Friesian steers sold to £855 (132p/kg) from Mr N Smith, Longhope.
The older heifers saw Charolais’ to £895 (153p/kg) from Mr D Spartt, Aust & £880 (167p/kg) from M/s A Wilcox & Sons, Coaley.
The farming cattle (16 – 20mnths) met a very strong trade with the better shaped sorts well sold with steers to £1015 (159p/kg) & £930 (170p/kg) for British Friesian steers from Mr W Moon, Dursley. The best Continental traded readily between £770 - £900 topping at £955 (177p/kg) for a Simmental from M/s H Farnsworth & Son, Chedworth Laines.
The native breeds saw Hereford steers to £930 (188p/kg) again from /s A Wilcox & Sons, Coaley. The farming Friesian steers traded between £580 - £720 (125 – 150p/kg). The heifers saw a grand run of Continental’s from M/s G Maidment & Sons, Cleverton selling to £900 (184p/kg) & £818 (172p/kg). Simmental heifers from M/s H Farnsworth & Son, Chedworth Laines topped at £950 (165p/kg).
The younger stores (15 – 18mnths) again saw the best cattle very dear with Charolais steers to £1060 (180p/kg) from Mr P Sidgwick, Winchcombe & £990 (180p/kg) from Mr G Lovell, Elmore. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £970 (194p/kg) from Mr P Haskins, Faringdon.
The heifers also met a good trade with Charolais to £860 (169p/kg) from Mr G Lovell, Elmore & £800 (160p/kg) for Blondes from M/s J Spencer & Son, Newbold on Stour. The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus to £782 (180p/kg) from Mr P Haskins, Faringdon.
The weaned calves & young stores (8 – 12mnths) also met a wonderful trade. The better shaped sorts saw Charolais steers to £850 (200p/kg) & £785 (218p/kg) from Mr B Yeates, Nupend. Limousin steers sold to £780 (200p/kg) from M/s M & P Slinger, Edge with their Aberdeen Angus steers to £730 (197p/kg)

Overall Average – 170p/kg
A much improved entry considering the big drop in trade so far this week. Today’s trade was again much better than expected and up some 8 – 10p/kg on many centres yesterday. The best export type lambs traded between 180 – 185p/kg topping at 189p/kg twice £66 for 35kg from M/s Blackwell & Froud & £72 for 38kg from Mr A Grindle. The general run of lambs traded between 165 – 175p/kg with only a few of the plainer or very loose coated lambs under these figures. The heavier lambs traded generally between £78 - £80 topping at £80.20 for 50kg from Mr A Cook.

Another good entry of ewes sold to a slight easier trade with the ewe trade a lot less in many places but our trade held up well. Again no very best Suffolk & Continental’s on offer with the stronger sorts £85 - £95 with Mules £70 - £75. The medium & half meated ewes traded between £62 - £72 with the bigger plain ewes £55 – £65. The smaller or very plain ewes traded between £45 - £55. Slaughter Rams sold to £120.

285 BREEDING EWES (Avg £88) - A mixed show on offer with Suffolk Theaves to £130 from Mr P Davidson Smith & Lleyn x Texel Theaves to £115 from Miss Y Coleman. Smaller Lleyn Theaves were generally harder to place topping at £107 from Mr P Haskins. Older ewes saw North Country Mules to £86 from Mr C Blaken with Suffolk’s to £96 from Mr H Houghton.
254 STORE & EWE LAMBS (Avg £57.19) - A reasonable entry sold to a very strong trade with Suffolk Mule store lambs to £70 & £69.50 from Mr P Pockney. The medium lambs seemed very well sold between £58 - £63.
37 BREEDING RAMS (Avg £121) - Most breeds forward saw the best Suffolk Shearlings to £242 & £218 from Miss P Robinson. Texel Shearlings to £200 from Mr A Pajak. Medium rams traded between £125 - £180. Rare & Minority breed rams traded generally between £70 - £85

A disappointing entry following last week’s flyer met a mixed show which sold to a good trade. No very best cattle (E & U+ grades) forward with the better shaped sorts (R & O+ grades) trading between 175 – 185p/kg topping at 186p/kg for a 610kg Simmental heifer from Mr R Cook. The few lesser shaped sorts (O+ & O- grades) traded between 155 – 165p/kg.

Met another very strong demand with demand far out stripping supply.
Best Continental cows traded 130p+ peaking at 162p (645kg0 from James Bell, Tetbury with South Devon 9665kg) at 148p and a Blonde Cow (700kg) at 147p from Simon Poffley, Cheltenham. A pair of good Limousin Cows from C J E Warr & Sons saw 710 kg make 147p and 680 kg made 146p.
Norwegian Red cows 670 kg made 137p for Jim Puddephatt who also sold other Friesians at 132p (750kg ) and 645 kg at 130p. Medium cows also sold very well at 110p-120p a few plainer cows 80—90 per kilo.
