Reviews

The Australian Christian Vol.97 No.6, 23 April 1994

reviewing “From Genesis to Revelation” a concert by the Modbury Choral Group

The 1994 Adelaide Festival Fringe culminated with an inspiring Christian concert sponsored by members of the Modbury S.A. church.

The program was based on a wide selection of original works written especially for the Modbury church’s amateur choral group “Heirs of the Kingdom” and was directed by the choir’s conductor Carole-Anne Fooks. Professional musicians Barbara Turner (contralto) and John Hall (organist) delighted the audience with solo items between the choral presentations.

The concert was held in the beautiful Wesley Church in Kent Town, Adelaide, opening with the choir singing the exhilarating first movement of the “Creation Cantata” based on Genesis 1.

/ The choir then sang the joyfully jazzy “Who is He?”, followed by the anthem “We See Jesus” which is an intriguing blend of medieval and modern music celebrating the fifteen attributes of Jesus described in Hebrews 1:1-13 and 2:9-10.
The first half of the concert ended with the harmonious counterpoint and earnestness of the song “Forgiveness”, based on Ephesians 1 and Romans 8.
Following an item by John Hall, the program concluded with the choral group presentation of the highly dramatic cantata “It’s a Revelation” with Stephen Wright giving one of his best performances as the tenor narrator John of Patmos.
The large audience enthusiastically received the whole performance.
