CNI/UNI Combined Regional Water Activities Meeting – Auckland Regatta 2015

Auckland Regatta – Comments from the day / fun / well run - thanks
gybing issues raised
what caused cutters to go over
predominantly gybing so could be training issue that needs to be addressed with kids and adults
committee boat –
start line finish quite crowded but congrats as there were no coming together in the conditions with the children racing
over all std of sailing and watching has been improved from previous regattas
kids hit over head with booms
downwind sailing let kids know about weight distribution
cold kids
4 came in today in junior class
need to remember to watch and teach what kids are wearing on water
Not good enough to just ask – need to actually check
Not only impacts the kids, but also patrol boats too
Akl Regatta organisation / Suggestion to include a greater degree of training
First and foremost remember the Scout concept
Coaching Class??
Comment
Needs to happen prior to Regatta
Seamanship / Theory paper that has been put together was done with the intention of discussion with the kids not just to be written up –
Highlight today was kids who do not know diff between port or starboard tack and who is responsible for keeping a lookout
What course to use? / Anted Feedback now that we have been using current course for some time
Any other suggestions?
Good feedback that this works with kids as they could learn once
Nationally need agreement of 3 or 4 (?) standard courses to allow for consistent training
Start procedures need to be consistent nationally also
Event organisation / Draft list of what should be included when organising events such as regatta
Improvement on management of triage and crisis management
Training Courses / Scouting NZ in process of talking with Coastguard in Akl initially –
National looking at sponsorships to being costs to no or little cost
What courses would we be interested in? .
What needs to be converted and how frequently ?
Aim is to up skill adult volunteers
Great idea –
day skippers
Suggestion day skippers over the year once south and once north suggested –
possibly central for third course if required
radio operators - restricted radio or VHF
rescue safety boat operation
boat master
sea kayaking
what locations?
When?
weekend or spread over sessions –
weekend more popular option
Comments:
Is day skipper too basic for charge cert?
Should we consider boat masters to ensure level of knowledge matches teaching ability of kids ?
Need more practical skills / training
what the needs/ gaps in knowledge
so that they can be coordinated
Suggestion Coastguard need to work with scouts re working with little boats
perhaps local yacht clubs also
National Regatta and continuing relationship with Navy / Great relationship currently but will be 9 years till next national regatta back in Akl
So lets use the site for some training activities
primary intention is to up skill adults and secondary to maintain the relationship
suggestion at previous WAA meeting to have long weekend in January held at base for practical leader training - is this a good idea?
January may not work due to timing with Jamborees....
Suggestion on moving Akl regatta there and consider logistics involved....
Waitemata challenge for leaders in a days activity but day activity so could run this anywhere.....
Some stay and some attend day sessions.....
Possibility of navy personal avail to assist with training?
conversation to be held around possibly of leader training at 3 weekends over the year incl winter to learn skills required in the cold
Winter Sailing / Pakuranga sailing club run a winter series that scouts and young mariners get involved
Wakatere narrow neck sailing club) also run a series and are happy to have another fleets or classes involved - opportunity to think about.
Pt Chev also has but is expectation to provide safety boat
Swimming Sports / Bucks Beach offered to organise again thanks - let's support and get behind this.
Not restricted to sea scout groups.
To be held at Dio on 28th June
Canoe carnival / Aotea running this again –
open to anyone. It is not just open to sea scouts so please encourage participation please
Venue Onehunga Lagoon

Missing trophies / Angela advises there are several (nearly half) trophies missing for Akl Regatta, please check your ships / dens.
Some accountability needs to be attributed to the groups awarded them.
