Grading Policy:

§  Two mid-term exams (during the Friday meeting time) each 25% of the total grade

§  Final exam: 25% of the total grade

§  Assignments: 25% of the total grade

Topics:

  1. Design of steel floor and roof decks and steel joists
  2. Masonry design: introduction, material properties, unreinforced load-bearing walls, reinforced masonry
  3. Timber design: introduction, material properties, beams, columns, trusses

Course Objectives:

·  To develop technical competence in steel roof and floor deck system design procedures.

·  To develop technical competence in steel joist design procedures.

·  To develop knowledge of the engineering properties of materials for masonry construction.

·  To develop a technical understanding of the structural behavior of load-bearing unreinforced masonry walls subjected to gravity and wind, and reinforced masonry beams and columns under gravity loads.

·  To develop a technical competence in design procedures for load-bearing unreinforced masonry walls subjected to gravity and wind, and reinforced masonry beams and columns under gravity loads.

·  To develop an understanding of the unique material aspects of wood and wood-based materials.

·  To develop a technical understanding of the structural behavior of wood components and structures subjected to loads.

·  To develop technical competence in single-member wood design procedures.
